i dont need one, i think it common knowledge that most homeless in Alberta come from eastern canada in search of a job - but with the lack of housing dont have anywhere to live. Some of them tend to pick up bad habits or already brought these habits with them.....
winter hits and they move off to the mild climate and better welfare payments of the west coast....
Hardly a blanket statement and has been an issue in Alberta for decades. I am also not pretending that native albertans (if there is such a thing anymore) dont also have those problems, just like not all junkies in vancouver are from alberta....

Standards have changed greatly since Lake Placid.

Don't think that those stats are correct. Whiteface (Lake Placid)'s vertical is well over 3000', Tremblant is over 2000', Jay Peak is over 2000' (great hill), Mt St Anne is over 2000', Marble is over 1500'.
To Compare, Lake Louise is 3250', St Moritz is 3800'.

One of the most serious threats to Alberta's boom is the labour shortage. One of the most likely causes of a labour shortage in Alberta, is because they are screaming for skilled labourers and tradespeople in BC.
If these protesters and complainers would put as much time and energy into improving their lives as they do in giving this country a black eye...we would ALL be better off.

After looking in to it more I believe you're right that I'm wrong. I remember hearing that regarding 'hill top to bottom elevation' standards at some point, but I must have misunderstood.
Do you know if there have been FIS World Cups out East in recent years? It would make sense if they if they had the same standards as the IOC.

I know Tremblant is not far off. I was there when they were building a platform at the summit ('96) to try to lengthen the course to qualify. I think the issue is not with the vertical but the time to complete the course is not long enough. They had to use the north side as the base is lower than the south.
Don't know about recent downhill/super g type events out east. Doubt it though. I am more of a big mountain/free skiing type of guy and don't follow racing. Although I did beat a member of the jr US ski team in a GS race when I was 15.

Sorry, Mel, we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one. Do you work in addictions, homelessness, etc?
A couple of things:
-homelessness was huge in Calgary/Alberta before any of our past "big booms"
-yes, some people move here but a lot of the time they come here for a job already in place
-yes, there are some that come to Alta w/out a job. However, it is extremely hard not to....when Alberta is basically screaming for people to come and take those jobs. If they didn't, there would be an even greater shortage of workers in Alberta
-It is NOT easy to just pick up and move. Whether you hitchhike all the way or not (which itself is fairly dangerous), you are ignoring the fact that a lot of homeless people don't have money to move. However "cheap" you do it, it still costs money.
-there were addictions in alberta before, during and after any of the booms or busts.
-...

Hey Mr. Coffee, fair enough, but you have to remember that its not just so easy for a lot of people to pick up and move. They don't literally have the $$ to. That is one of the challenges of being homeless. Yes, they can hitchhike etc...but that is unsafe, who knows when you will make it there, and that still costs $$ (food, toiletries, etc). Also, a lot of people may not move to Sask if they don't have a job there. As well, you saw the assistance rates I quoted....could you move on that? Let alone feed, house and clothe yourself?
