Vegas was the most asset-rich franchise in NHL history from JUMP. There's no competing with the prospect and asset capital they accumulated.
It's too bad, and highly disappointing for the Flames because it keeps them in the dreaded middle zone. Not bad enough to get high draft picks, too good for ownership to greenlight a rebuild. This was an opportunity to edge into elite territory and have a fighter's chance, or to totally bomb out and do a proper rebuild.
Now, we can hope that more tinkering on the edges solidifies this roster as a playoff contender. It's a scary proposition with some huge contract renewals on the horizon and a history of inconsistent performance from those players.

Yeah I can't hate the expansion player - I can only hate the game (and the bozo managers that played badly).
That said, Vegas has made good moves over the years but is certainly not mistake free - Lehner seems to have been a misstep. A lack of a great 1C (masked by Karlsson's anomolous first season there) has hurt them. and they are in a pretty precarious position right now as far as having to win or have a pretty rapid decline due to contracts and age of some of their top players, without a lot of draft capital.

The rules for expansion are deeply flawed.

The rules were designed that way on purpose. The other 30 NHL owners made a cold-blooded, calculated decision that put $1.15 billion in their pockets. Vegas and Seattle weren't paying that kind of money for old-fashioned expansion teams.
Of course the fans of those 30 teams don't like it, which is our right. But on the whole, it's kind of fun for us all to have Vegas to hate. A perpetual heel is so much more entertaining than a perpetual loser!

Define "swing for the fences". What offer assures you of a "win" here? Especially versus a Theodore offer.

I guess them wanting a Theodore makes sense if Tre isn't willing to budge on Hanifin.
Still... #### Vegas.

Taking a while to get to 5000

^^ Right? Would seem Hanifin would have to be moved and right now, for this Flames team, that doesn't make much sense.

Krebs is a play driver with a non-stop motor. He is the type of guy you win with.
Think of how good Mangiapane looks right now. He is that type of player with higher offensive upside.

Even if Treliving offered Hanifin++, does that beat a Theodore/Krebs+ offer?

No, so I think we have to be brave here and accept that the Golden Knights are going to blow their whole leg off just to get it done.
I really wanted Eichel though. Very sad feels right now.

Maybe it is all a smokescreen and Hanifin's day to day is making sure he didn't actually get injured

Them adding Eichel is a ####ing disaster for the Flames IMO.
|
No actually thought in the off season they'd be a bad team and miss the playoffs. Vegas was good without Stone so with him injured they should still be a good team. Pacioretty is a good player but good teams can still surivive without a good player or two.
I think them selling futures has caught up to them. I think they'll be a non playoff team for 3 years or longer. They don't scare me even with eichel.
Heck edmonton has mcdavid and draisatl, both better players than eichel and they can't win a playoff game.

Well, you've already got the perpetual heel instead, so it's a bit late to make that call now.

Theodore > Hanifin so if he is on the table we are probably taking a seat. I dont think its the right move fore Vegas though.
I am also going to dissent on the Krebs comments here. I think he's an OK prospect but not the best prospect on either team. Zary has as good or better a pedigree (and made team Canada...) with similar production and better size. + plenty of folks around here think Coronato is a step above Zary (also disagree but ok).

If Buffalo thinks he is the best prospect available then that is all that matters and I think that was floated months ago by the talking heads.
I will only be disappointed if the return to Sabres is crappy.

Agreed.

Also agreed. But Coronato is a pure sniper where Zary isn't, and snipers are very hard to come by. So while Coronato may not be a better prospect over all, he's probably more valuable to the organization – especially at RW.

Fair enough, I just think it's silly that some people have wantonly flocked to that talking point so easily.
IMO a strong comparable for Krebs is Morgan Frost.

The silver lining is if Vegas can't find a way to make the money work that Buffalo would be satisfied with.
They have a ton of cap that will come off IR at some point and up against it as is. They need to shed serious money to add a 10M player. And Krebs and even Theodore don't make up that ground money wise.
Its much more complex making the trade work with Vegas than Calgary right now.
But if Buffalo likes the Knights package they probably find a way to gymnastics it into place.

The problem is it doesn't matter what any on CP think vis-a-vis Krebs versus Zary. It seems like a pretty safe conclusion that Krebs is considered by pundits/scouts/etc to be better. Really, all that matters is what Vegas thinks of them.
