Default 101.5 FM (New Station)

This is a new station in town. It seems to play absolutely everything, I heard country music, Nelly Furtado, Bryan Adams and GNR in 4 consecutive songs. Apparently it's all request radio and the name of station will be determined by the fans. Does anyone know how this will work?

Oh if let the fans name the station I'm thinking a massive internet jihad to give it a ridiculous name.

Is it just me, or does it seem like there is a new radio statio popping up every month, and the other ones are changing their format every two months.

I don't even bother with it unless it's CBC or Flames. I can't keep track. I have no idea what station, if one exists, that I would listen to for music I like. Maybe CJSW, but even that is impossible with entire shows devoted to genres of music I don't want to hear.

.
There were 4 new licenses approved some time ago for the Calgary market (plus two in rural communities) so we are seeing these new stations start to come online now. One more in Calgary should be on the way soon.

Listening online I've heard Corrs, some artist I can't remember and Counting Crows.

Pretty "meh" so far. But more choice is good I guess.

All request? Sure, if you happen to request one of the 40 songs they are going to play anyway.

All request isn't that bad. I think it'll be fine.

P.S. Maybe a mod should merge the two threads about the new stations.

Calgary had a station like this about 10 years ago that played everything; rock, country, etc except it wasn't all request. I think it was called Kiss FM.

In the end, it got pulled....

I highly doubt it will be an all request station. Sounds like more of a marketing gimmick to me. When the station was approved, it was clearly stated by Chum it would be a Hot AC station. Which was for the most part missing in this city anyways.

I would bet it remains a Hot AC station.

They are also just testing the signal right now. Look for a full launch prob within the next month or so.

The best part today was when I turned on 101.5 FM and then flipped to the other new station and found they were playing the same song.

More stations=same amount of music.

XFM 92.9 is alright.. plays alot of 90's rock + alternative that CJAY never does. Get alot of EMO though. All request sounds like it has potential but as someone already said, there'll be alot of the same stuff heard on other radio stations. I think there's a folk radio station coming soon too which might be interesting...

It's that CRTC law that forces radio stations to play 33% Canadian made music which means your chances of hearing Nickleback, 54-40, Sum 41, Avril Lavigne, Bryan Adams, Tom Cochrane, Tragically Hip, Our Lady Peace, The Headstones, etc, are high. That rule is actually starting to ruin some Canadian artists I didn't mind before simply because they are so overplayed. If it's legal a station should meet it's Canadian quota from 12am - 8am then go nuts for the rest of the day playing other stuff..

Not exactly.
HotAC
Will be a cross between Light 96 and Vibe 98.5
Kelly Clarkson
Nickelback
BNL
James Blunt

But not Celine Dion or any obvious lite artists. They will probably also go easy on the bubble gum too.
HotAC is a format designed for woman 25-40. Work friendly, but not too slow. Basically it will be what The Peak was 3 or 4 years ago.

Count me amongst those that think radio is usually low-brow, conformist, popularity-contest entertainment.

It's also great that the radio personalities are from Toronto.

At least with these three latest stations I can fill my 12 presets with different stations in the car.
