Beach also mentioned the "million follower insiders" which after a quick look, I can only see Dreger and McKenzie that have over 1 million twitter followers. If they had the story and didn't put it out there, that's not a good look, in my opinion.

But honestly, this is about a mindset. It's about prioritizing success over humanity. It's about a distorted set of ethical values that are pervasive and integrated into every aspect of this game, and pro sports in general.

I worry that this will continue to happen until the culture of winning at all costs changes.
Well, sure. And it'll take a long time to change that mindset.

Consequences are the first step.

You did something wrong? You face the consequences. No covering it up. Then at the same time you help the victim, and set something up to help other victims because I'm sure there are others. Truly help, not some half baked attempt at looking good as far as the public goes.

Many organizations have done a great job in helping players when it comes to substance abuse & addiction. The Flames are a great example of this.

So there are ways. But what the NHL is doing now is telling the perpetrators they can get away with while at the same time telling the victims if the come forward nothing will be done about it anyways. Well, unless you have a dog on a bone like Westhead going after the story while other sports outlets like the Athletic, Sportsnet & CBC try to constantly bury it.

I was wondering about this as well.

I thought he had no idea, and now he is saying he found out about it the next year?

And then he did what? Act like nothing happened? Apparently.

What a coward.

There should be backlash and consequences for bull$&#@ reporting and accusations like this on very real serious life situations that attempt to shed positive light on your dog#$&@ team and players when frankly it should be quite the opposite. Believe the Edmonton media has reached a new low here, very impressive for their standards.
To be fair, the Edmonton media is just doing what their corporate overlords are telling them to do. Basically the same thing Hrudley, McClean, Friedman, Bieska and the gang at CBC & Sportsnet have been doing for months while we were all sitting here shocked at what was coming out and wondering why Westhead isn't getting any help in pushing the story.

Sportsnet Corporate instructed them to say that Duncan Keith would have done something if he would have known?

Doing this after the Beach interview is a different beast.

After ignoring it for months, SN were fully aboard the “praise and honour the brave victim for positive PR and ratings” train last night.

Every segment, of which they dedicated several, were all about how they were right there supporting the victim and admiring his bravery, bringing in experts like Sheldon, who strangely didn’t even watch the Beach interview before appearing and didn’t seem overly familiar with the situation.

It was quite the turnaround from avoiding ever acknowledging the incident to patting themselves on the back for standing behind the victim all along.

Disgusting, really.

I can’t help but feel the same about all the insiders. MacKenzie, Friedman et al. They all ignore this story for months.

They should. Wasn't it around 130 people who did speak to the investigators?

How can you not say anything? Bet one of them was that Jim Gary who was one of the worst offenders in that situation, especially with him putting all the blame on Beach.

I'm not sure anyone other than the investigators have the names. I bet one name is Duncan Keith.

Absolutely. Seems to be getting lost in the mix a bit with the coaches and players as more interesting names to discuss, but this guy was a mental health professional employed to specifically deal with the players mental issues and this is what his response is?

F*** that guy. And the whole Hawks org for continuing to employ him for years beyond this.

Not just that, but changes in the way that hockey is run for kids.
Seems like nothing has changed with vulnerable teens leaving home with no support system. With a lot of power over these kids and their futures put in the hands of people with what appears to be little oversight.

Thank you I wrote in as well.

How can you watch the interview with Kyle Beach and believe this is the avenue you want to take when discussing sexual abuse. It's sick and it's dismissive of Beach's story and gives no credit to people like Vincent, Boyton, or Sopel in their efforts to aide the situation. You don't have to treat Kieth like a villan, but maybe just allow him to have that platform to speak up.

Personally as a Flames fan I would hope to see some sort of statement by the two connected players to that 2010 Cup team from Brouwer and Versteeeg.

I don't know.

I would assume most players probably did speak to the investigators, and many probably just said what they said in public "we didn't know. tunnel vision, kinda heard rumors, playoff focus, blah blah." heck, look at the post above mine. The players seem too stupid to just keep their mouths shut.

Would anyone know if the investigators can legally say who refused to participate?
I don't see why not as they wouldn't be giving up confidential information by just saying "So and so refused to speak"

Oh Toews. As soon as you reference the loss of “everything they care about” in regards to people getting held to accountability, instead of the actual victim, immediately washes any shred of humanity that may have remained for you. Gross.

Yes. The opportunity to resign. What a tragedy.
