I was thinking that too. I was shy to say it because I didn't want it to sound like money was the important issue, but man I hope Beach gets one hell of a massive settlement out of this.

All those losers on HNIC have just shown everyone how pathetic they are. So happy to about non-NHL issues like residential schools, mental health....but as soon as something arises regarding the NHL they get very quiet.
MacLean, Hrudley, Bieska, Friedman.....where have they been the last few months? We've all known about this disgusting act for a long time now.

Agreed Sportsnet needs to take some heat here
Clear cover up action. Also, Rogers generally as parent company.
Sure strikes me like there’s a LOT of greed with the NHL.

There is no reason to be shy about it. Financial compensation is both right, and the necessary thing to do. No, it does not fix the damage to Kyle Beach that has been done, but this is how reparations are made in our culture. The NHL, the Chicago Blackhawks, coaches, managers and players all set their selfish interests and profits ahead of the well-being of a 20-year-old kid. They damn well better pay for it now.

Good for Kyle Beach in having the courage and doing this interview and basically blowing the cover off it all. Yeah, people may have known (I didn't read the report) and suspected it was him but now the whole thing is out in the open.
You would think that with after Graham James this whole thing would be squashed and over and wouldn't be happening anymore but it's still happening quite a bit with coaches at lower levels and other sports. There's still frequent stories in the news about these offenders.

That’s disgusting, another example of what’s wrong with sports media. They’re more concerned with maintaining access to players and team officials they’re willing to overlook stories or act as downright shills carrying water for the team they purport to cover.
The Beach interview was heart-wrenching and none of the support he’s receiving today would have happened if not for the real reporters like Rick Westhead, Katie Strang, Emily Kaplan and Mark Lazerus who have done the hard work and dug into this story. The team would still be in denial mode if they weren’t forced into corner by these reporters’ tough questions and the backlash from negative coverage and perceptions.
Everything about this story has shown how ugly hockey culture can be and how “sports reporters” are willing to look the other way. Actual journalists uncover unpopular truths. There should be a lot of mea culpas—from the league, NHLPA, the so-called leaders on the team. But the media and NHL insiders need to own their share for ignoring the story as long as they did. They’ve shown they’re little more than part of the NHL’s PR machine. I guess all they can be counted on for is entertainment and sharing trade rumours and other speculation.

You're not going to find upstanding morals in pro sports. Look elsewhere. Not politics either.

Had an idea!

Kennedy said during the summer when the allegations were becoming more public that people refused to listen to him 25 years ago, and 25 years later nothing had changed.
And to think, we are talking about basic human decency. What kind of sick, twisted type of person do you have to be where you can't speak out against this stuff?

I'm broken after watching that. That man's life has been shattered by this.
But honestly, it's hard to know what to do to make things right. It's fine to punish those involved, but how do we change the culture and the mindset so that this doesn't happen again? That's the harder question to answer, but the one that must be answered in the end.

Accountability would go a long way towards changing the culture.
It is happening cause there are no consequences.

I believe in the Jays.
|
If the NHL doesn’t step up and do something big about this then the fans should step up and stop watching the NHL. A message needs to be sent one way or another.
It’s heart breaking to hear about this.

I mean, sorta, consequence for actions do help to deter those actions in the future.
But honestly, this is about a mindset. It's about prioritizing success over humanity. It's about a distorted set of ethical values that are pervasive and integrated into every aspect of this game, and pro sports in general.
I worry that this will continue to happen until the culture of winning at all costs changes.

Look at these two soul-less shills, standing in front of a wall of self righteousness and circle jerking an Oilers player in a situation this serious.
Honestly just #### the #### off already. This situation is so far beyond this schtick. I’m disgusted
