It's great to see real Sutter hockey. It truly is a treat to see this. It's huge that there is buy-in from the team, and I think this could be the most well-balanced team I have seen Sutter coach in Calgary.
I have 2 concerns, however:
1) This is a concern for after this season: Darryl manages to get the most from his players individually. I'm afraid that in the future we will not be able to afford some assets that we currently have due to performance and salary cap. Anyway, tomorrow's problem.
2) Monahan's FO% was 8. That's 1/12.

A light breeze could blowout the Habs right now...so enjoy, I see a lot of losses for Seattle this season. At least they raised a cup banner for another team though lol.

They can lose all they want as far as I'm concerned, so long as they try. Shane Wright would look pretty good in Blue anyway.

as weird as it sounds a 4-0 lead in the first is kinda tough...I would rather have it than not obviously but that is a long time to play out a game
A break or two and they get some momentum (and they got that break)
If anything though the Flames should have had more goals this game

Just watching the first period (which I missed live) and I am fairy certain that Monahan should have been credited with an assist on Lucic's goal. Gudbranson forwarded it up to Monahan, who chipped it over to Lucic.
Also, what a period. These guys are playing some hockey right now!. Hard working, fast paced, relentless forechecking is the best hockey there is. 2003/04 was my favourite year of hockey in my entire life. And while it's early, it's a small sample size, and it isn't playoffs, the style they are playing right now is similar to that.
I hope they keep this up, because man it is fun to watch!

Great game considering that it was the second of back-to-backs, and fourth game in week, on the road... with the back-up in net. I can't fault them for losing some steam as the game went on. Winning the game in the 1st period is a sound strategy.

They can be mediocre at best forever

For now anyways. I’ll be back to calling them the suckiest sucks that ever sucked after a few losses. Looking forward to it actually.

Obviously targeting a subset of fans that includes (or is perhaps in your mind spearheaded by) myself. That's fair, and I own whatever is coming my way. I haven't posted anything in a while because I don't want the label of a flip-flopper, when all I wanted was a hockey team that played with the kind of civic pride this team hasn't had since... God, maybe the last time Darryl Sutter had a full season?
I didn't believe a coach could overcome 15 years of suck, but it turns out 15 years of suck was caused by 15 years of sucky coaching. I own that mistake and I accept whatever ####posts are headed my way. Have at me.

Gallant being a new hire this year is going to be in tough to get them to buy in quickly enough to remain competitive.
However, I do like the coaching. How can we not? Sutter was the best coach we ever had even though crisper won the big one. That team was way more stacked than Darryls team. .
He had our rag tag grinder group with an elite pwf, an elite shutdown defender and a generational goalie. We were a francoise beauchemin ko over iggy from going deeper into those playoffs with a hungrier group in 2006. That lock out really screwed the flames the worst. No salary cap, high oil prices, and that squad. We could’ve been a powerhouse… Alas back to it… Sutter is a great coach. When he went upstairs is where it started going wrong.
Yet by a shrewd move, the ownership group hired sutter again. The effect is real. The chemistry is building. If they can beat some of these alleged superior squads then we might have something.
In the end, I’m actually grateful for this start. I was super excited watching a game last night with my friend. This has been entertaining so far.
I’m still worried about our offence behind the top line yet I stick to my under two hundred but some bad hockey is going to have to precede that reality. It would have to take some real catastrophe from what the flames are looking like right meow.
Still like this crow taste. Happy to eat a slice of humble pie served with tonight’s affair!

Yep. New Jersey was terrible tonight, but that organization is loaded with young talent. They are a different team with Jack Hughes in the lineup too. They will be competitive this year. Very tough division, but I believe they will be playing meaningful hockey in March.
Dawson Mercer is an absolute stud.

Meanwhile, the Oilers non-Calgary wins are against teams with a combined record of 7-14-3.

They clearly deserve to be trashed.
It's unreal the difference.
Gives me such mixed feelings. So happy that they look like they're on the right track now, but on the other hand they wasted like 5 seasons of this core and traded their highest ever draft pick for pennies on the dollar.

Love how Sutter keeps his players in check when the media talks an individual or the team up too much too
