It would have been a penalty anyways for delay of game on Backlund anyways, but yes.

It was pretty obvious this was going to be a problem when the genius GM didn't get something done to shake up the core and bring in more offensive weaponry. Now this team's margin is to score 2 goals and try to hang on for dear life each and every night? It's not happening often with guys like Monahan consistently taking the easy track in big moments and a hapless PP with no true elite finisher.
Give the man a proper season

Edit: I get the frustration. But we really really need to see what he can do with this team with what he is working with. Sutter has that ability to make teams hit another gear in the playoffs. I think we owe it to him to see if he can bring it again. That’s just my opinion

To be fair Montreal made it all the way to the Cup final using this formula.

So Sutter agreed Monahan had a bad game and is now a 4th liner ?

It's the ol' formula "get in and anything can happen" which is true but pretty wishful thinking.

Or he has played 2 games since hip surgery and needs time to get back up to speed

He looks better than I expected. I just don't understand why Ritchie has to be a fixture on the 4th line. Toughness is no longer an issue with Lucic, Gudbranson, and Zadorov already on the bench.

We're just lucky it wasn't a 5 on 3 to both Backlund and Tkachuk.
I thought about the possibility of two minors but since Tkachuk interfered and the puck didn't go into the stands, I imagine they can't call Backlund for delay of game.

Honestly, looking at those lines, the LW-C combos are all top-9-ish tier and then the RWs... Ritchie, Pitlick, and Lewis... are a dog's breakfast.

Message definitely being sent, but I don’t like seeing Ritchie on the wing with Mangiapane and Dube.

Once he gets a few more games under his belt it would be nice to see him play with a bit more skill. Darryl can always reunite Coleman with Backlund in December or January when he's out of his annual fog to start a season.

Can we please fire Brad Treliving before he tries to make a trade to save his job?

This team is no good.

Isn’t Pitlick heralded as a top 9 option?

The loss sucks, but the Flames were fun to watch again so I’ll take that! I missed the Oilers game so can’t comment on the opener:

Hounded the puck
Everything at the net
Quick transition up the ice

Flames will be fine if they can keep up this pace. Need a bit more finish and Markstrom to round into form.

Find a way to get Eichel and a top 4 defenseman before playoffs and I’ll be full blown excited.

Bottom 6. If he's on your first two lines something is wrong... or your have Ritchie and Lewis as your other options lol.

I was thinking the same thing. I felt all 3 have played well and seem to be very tenacious. Coleman or dube could center the line. I wouldn’t be surprised if this line exploded offensively

At this point monahan could be removed from the lineup and I doubt we miss him. Hopefully demoting him to 4th gets him going

Not willing to give Pitlick a game even?

Monahan needs to be traded, even if it's not at his peak value. He's done in Calgary.
