Yup.
I don't see any issue at all with a third party spending unlimited amounts of money promoting or not promoting a candidate as long as there is no slander.
If Tim Hortons can spend millions of dollars advertising their new soft cooked chicken sandwich, why can't I buy ads promoting Joyti Gondek or Jeff Davison.
Just my opinion. I am sure everyone will disagree.
EDIT: I do think the source of the funding should be disclosed.

Why do we want the wealthy to have the ability to purchase political power?

They are not purchasing anything.
They are simply voicing an opinion.

Not just the wealthy, but the wealthiest who almost always have interests that go against the public good. We might have prevented climate change if it wasn't for huge PACs supporting candidates who deny it's a problem.

And those opinions get heard by more people because they have more (almost unlimited) money to spread them. It should be a fair playing field where all opinions get heard and are judged on their merits.

So what?
This is a rich country. Both sides of an argument are flush with cash.
Your argument is not persuading.

If "both" sides of an argument are flush with cash, and donations should be unlimited, why should donations need to be disclosed?

Question for Roughneck and DownInFlames and burn_this_city
Why are you opposed to a cash limit on paid advertising when you can have an unlimited social media campaign?
Media is media. Advertising is advertising.
Honestly now that a lot of this stuff has moved to social media campaign finance laws are becoming even more irrelevant and outdated.

“Opinions”
You mean bald faces lies designed to influence elections to benefit a small group of people against the public interest.

It was nice to see no Chu signs out this morning. They may be around, but not on the route I took.
Early Chu voters may have buyers remorse.

I think you are making a better argument for restricting advertising on food products like we do on cigarettes then making a case for unlimited spending on elections.
We know that advertising works. So if some individuals and groups can spend more than others then it move us further from each individual having equal say in democracy. Your position appears to distill down to people with means should have more influence.
Social media campaigns are forms of paid advertising.

Having an unlimited social media campaign? Still costs money. Certainly for an effective one. Especially now that paid advertising is such a staple of social media network. So not only do you pay traditional advertisers for content to put on social media and traditional media, but to have an effective “grassroots” social media campaign requires full time people: people to manage the accounts and keep interactions up. Graphic designers. Editors. Etc. If I can pay more, good people, I have better social media presence.
It can stretch your money further, sure. But this isn’t 2010. Nobody is running effective, much less unlimited, social media advertising on a shoestring budget anymore.

OK. What is Gonek's stance on property taxes?
I know Davison is for a 4 year freeze which is why I am supporting him.

Well, yeah I guess so. I think we can all agree with your post, getting back on topic, that Chu should resign.

Mayor Nenshi asked a pretty good question in his letter posted on Twitter today.
Quote:
Not to put too fine a point on it, but our taxes have increased by less than our population growth and inflation since 2016. We cannot sustain this forever.
So anyone who is promising a four-year tax freeze needs to explain how they will do it – particularly if they want to invest more in the largest department: the police.
There are only two ways: massive cuts to smaller departments like parks and recreations or using the savings account to paper over annual deficits. Maybe this is the right thing to do, but we need to be honest about it.

I don't think Davidson or Fark(no)us has answered those questions in any real-world way.
As for Gondek, here's what her principles on Property Taxes are.
