Virgin - no BS system access fees, no activation fees, and you don't have to pay for call ID or voice mail.

If you plan on travelling to the US or overseas I'd go with rogers. If not Virgin is the way to go. I am a virgin customer and quite happy with the service and reception, only down side is that it doesn't work in the US (yet).

Rogers = GSM
Virgin = CDMA

GSM > CDMA

Having said that, however...

Fido > Rogers.

I'd say Virgin

Rogers screws every customer they have

Virgin hasn't screwed anyone

(haha sorry I had to go there)

I know Fido and Rogers are owned by Rogers, but Fido has a better air time pack still does it not?

Roger's is a joke to me. They bill per minute which really rips you off and I have only once received a rebate on all teh phones I have owned. They "get lost in the mail, not received in time" BS!

The only reason I haven't switched is waiting for my number to be portable from carrier to carrier.

So I am interested in what people recommend...

Fido or Virgin?

Depends on what you need. I like Fido, have never had a problem. Per second billing, international phones, much more phone selection, and if you want you can get any unlocked GSM phone... more options if you use lots of daytime minutes (200 for $20 is the biggest option for Virgin it seems).. Data packages if you need to use that kind of thing.

But if you just need a phone to make phone calls and don't need any of the extras, Virgin seems pretty good.

I really like per second billing. That would probably be the clincher for me as per minute really smokes you from month to month. I just wasn't so sure if Roger's allowed Fido to still use per second billing.

Also, Fido use to only be good in the city. Once you left town it was terrible. Is it any better now?

Bell rules over all phone companies, Rogers rips you off left, right and center.

So far, with Bell, my reception is below Telus, Fido or Rogers (had all before), but it's the best priced/features/service otherwise.

Beware of Rogers .... not sure about virgin as i have never dealt with them

1. Signed up to Rogers when they had there 6 month free local calling deal. They started billing me for all my calls after 4 months - i caught it and they refunded me almost $500 bucks

2. I had a deposit of 200 dollars that i was suppose to get back after a year - A year and 6 months later - no deposit, had to call them to get it back...

3. Upgraded my phone after 2 years service, the new phone was only 100 bucks with a 50 dollar rebate, filled out the rebate that day and mailed it in, 5 months later no rebate - had to call and in seconds it was taken off my bill....

Never had a problem getting back what was owed to me on the phone, but rogers policy apparently is just not do anything and hopefully they get away with it....really annoying....

Both my wife and I have Virgin Mobile cell phones, and they work great for us. We are saving a ton of money as compared to our previous plans. We only play $25 each every THREE months. And this includes voice mail & caller ID. I did a bit of shopping around, and this was the only plan I could find under $10/month. Granted, we don't use them every day, but they do have other plans and none of them include any fees for voice mail or system access.

The only downside for us, is that they don't work in the US. We are not in the US enough that this would factor into our decision. We haven't had a problem using them in Canada (Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, or driving betwen Calgary & Edmonton)

If you do decide to go with Virgin, make sure you get a referral from an existing customer. You both get a $10 credit bonus when doing this.

James.

I have Virgin Mobile and it's great. In fact, since the middle of September, I've only used about $35 of air time. It works perfect for my needs.

Compare that to the $32 a month I paid for Rogers, and that didn't include voice mail. I used my cell more with them, but the nice thing about Virgin is you pay for what you use and that's it!
