Top 6 talent in Calgary a far cry from players like Huberdeau and Barkov!

This is such a tough one. Really thought Bennett always had the potential to be a difference-making top 6 center. Nice to see him having this level of success so far in Florida.

But man it stings to seem him doing so well. Don't want to see him fail or anything, and not cheering against him, but it stings.

It's really too bad there wasn't more time for him and Sutter to work together. But he had already asked for a trade, and that marked the end of his time with the Flames.

I chalk this situation up to the failure of the Gulutzen-Peters-Ward coaching tree. Just crazy how bad that was. I get the argument that this was always more on Bennett than the organization, and to an extent I agree, but it's really baffling how poorly his development was handled by the coaching staff over time.

Hard to turn the page.

Offensively Gaudreau has a season better than either of them

Flames don't have two players at that level though which makes a huge difference

He doesn't play with Barkov and we do have a winger as good as Huberdeau.

It's really astonishing when you think about it. Fans knew what he could bring but our previous coaches didn't see it.
On top of that, when things weren’t working well for him, he tried hard. He hit guys, he fought, he cared. It was so obvious he didn’t get a fair shot here. So happy to see him being super successful in FLA. The Flames organization should be ashamed of themselves.

Different styles. Some players mesh with others. Huberdeau is a big guy himself and plays a big game. Bennett matches well with him.

One eye is tears of joy and happiness for the guy, one eye is tears of sorrow for what may have been.

There are so many variables that contribute to a players success in any given market. In Bennett's case I believe his development was and would have continued to be hampered here. Even if Calgary had acquired a player of Huberdeau's ilk, they would have likely been paired with guys not named Bennett anyway.

And also Quenneville.

I think it is more of an indictment that the Flames didn't know what they had in Sam Bennett and didn't have the right coaches to bring out his skill. Some are now saying we didn't have the talent to complement Sam Bennett, maybe that also is a management problem to some degree. Coach Q knew exactly what to do with Sam Bennett as soon as he got him.

For a little bit. He was pretty far into the back 9 then. I think of him and Gilmour as ripping it up in the 90s

Flames have to be better; If you have a top draft pick but don't know how to develop him properly that is a small problem.

You could see his talent, If I recall he got traded as the coach didn't like his defensive play.

He got traded because we needed a reliable back up goalie and shut down defenceman.

Sure he had the talent but I'd rather have the cup. Otherwise we would just be the Canucks.

Hull got traded because the team needed depth on D and was desperate for a reliable 1B goalie. Brian Glynn was a tweener, and Doug Dadswell was the worst goalie in the league that year.
