It doesn't matter how he plays. He has the Flames by the balls and knows it. The Flames have two options. Pay him the big salary above $9M a season, or trade him to someone who will. Otherwise he signs his qualifier and is an UFA the following summer and they're really screwed.

So does Matt go for 6 years on his next contract, so they can both be UFAs together?

What do you mean by this? Based on what I see Tkachuk looks like a lock to produce at a +65-pt. pace for the duration of his 20s, and already has a high-water mark in the high-70s. This kind of production definitely looks like a "sure thing." It costs a lot more for that now than it did seven or eight years ago.

It's not completely out to lunch...but it's an overpayment for sure.
Here are the forwards that have signed for $7M+ coming off their ELCs in 2021, and their PPG over the last two seasons:
Tkachuk - 7 x $8.2M - 0.63 PPG
Suzuki - 8 x $7.8M - 0.65 PPG
Pettersson - 3 x $7.4M - 0.93 PPG
Svechnikov - 8 x $7.75M - 0.84 PPG
Kaprizov - 5 x $9M - 0.93 PPG
Barzal - 3 x $7M - 0.89 PPG
Outside of Kaprizov who Minnesota overpaid due to Russian influence factors Tkachuk has the highest cap hit of that group, while having the lowest offensive production.

He's agreed to stay in a small market, non playoff Canadian team.
you have to pay more to a marquee player when you're in an undesirable market.
seems a fair price in the current market to get your centerpiece player signed long term.
If I'm an Ottawa fan, I'd be thrilled about the contract, especially with the cap space they have.

What would a deal with Ottawa look like to deal Matthew there?

Teams should never adopt this mindset.
It's impossible to win that way.

I don't know. you're a bad, but improving team that works hard and the players
seem to have chemistry. You've just signed your marquee player to a fairly reasonable long term contract and have cap space to spare.
I don't see what there is to dislike here.

Not to harp on technicalities, but what is a marquee player defined as here? I don't think B. Tkachuk is a franchise player personally. So they signed a solid player to a franchise player long term contract. Arguable how good that is for now and into the future.

Possibly. I think it will take $10M a year to sign Matty so I could see a 6 year $60M deal with a NMC.

Even if it's an overpay, I'd rather overpay a Tkachuk than spend $5-6 million on middling middle-six forwards with long term deals.
Identify your best players then pay them instead of losing them for nothing or getting 30 cents on the dollar. The Flames are terrible for this.

I know Matthew has had much more impressive numbers throughout his career but these brothers play a similar style. Think about everything Matthew brings to the team but a little bigger and meaner is what Brady brings. He will get the C with this deal I have no doubt. Everything we love about Matthew the Sens love about Brady. I do not look at this like an overpay to the Sens because as a Flames fan I know how awesome it is to have a Tkachuk on your team to cheer for.

People looking at points per game like that’s all that Brady brings. Kid throws 8 hits a game.

This is huge imo. There's hope to sign Matthew to a long term deal...Now dangle Mathew to the sens. Having the 2 of them together would be a dream so see if the sens will overpay to make that dream come true.

I don't think this is true - Matthew is known league-wide as perhaps the best pest in the game right now. Brady does not have that reputation, even though he is bigger and stronger. No one would take Brady over Matthew.
