He already acquired another dud though in OEL

I hate BT in Ufa but Jim takes the crown. Just can't wait to ink yesterday's bad players to big, new contracts

Even that trade for oel was something else. Literally shipped out like 3 bad contracts with little term so he could add him with the savings. His stupidity knows no bounds

I mean, look at that defense and compare it to 7 years ago when he took over. It wasn't great then but it was solid. He transformed into the worst in the league imo. Truly remarkable

Second worst in the league. Edmonton's is worse.

Hughes is pretty clearly better than Nurse. OEL is going to be a horrible contract but for the time being he isn't totally washed up, whereas Keith is. Myers and Barrie are of equivalent terribleness in their own end - Barrie at least can play PP2, so maybe slight advantage there. But Cody Ceci and Kris Russell... Russell was already all done 5 years ago and Ceci is horrendous. And Bouchard can't skate - solid power play QB, but he won't even get to play it because they'll give all those minutes to Barrie and Nurse.

Just a mess.

“We would have taken him anyways” is a no brainer to say. Makes it seem like two free third rounders and immediately makes the pick look like more of a steal

I think it is a safe bet that if they traded down the Flames were comfortable that they would get the player they wanted. They almost certainly asked Washington who they were selecting when they made the deal, so chances are good that Lapierre was never really a target. He was a very high-risk pick.

It’s definitely possible as Zary at 19 wouldn’t have been considered a reach

I just don’t think I’ve seen it confirmed anywhere

it's never going to be confirmed, but there was a lot of talk going into the draft that the Flames liked Zary.

There was also some chatter during the draft that things were falling the way they wanted, which allowed them to make the move and trade down. Don't remember which team it was - maybe the Rangers taking Schneider?
