Kylington is a forward now? and why is coleman playing on the 4th line? because he is going to be out for Saturday?

That's one way to deal with too many defencemen. Although, I guess with Backlund taking the day off and Stone out for COVID protocol reasons, they don't have any spare bodies.

Looking like Kylington is our 7th for the time being.
I'm wondering what this guy has to do. He outplayed Valimaki imo

I assume Coleman would normally be playing with Backlund and Gawdin is a placeholder?

If Kylington is pushed back to #7 this team is a joke.

literally nothing he does as a Flame will matter. He's been internally typecast, so to speak. See also: the Panthers' 20 minute a night #2C, who played that role in Calgary exactly zero times over six years.

I don't think we can draw any conclusions from this. It looks to me like the coaches are still shuffling the pairs in part to get a better handle on the combination options, and also to keep everyone skating.

Imagine Kylington is the RW we were missing all along! Kidding aside, I don't know what else he has to do to have a spot in the starting 6.

Or Dube is the placeholder for Coleman, and Ritchie is the placeholder for Dube, which seems like a strange way to practice to me.

He's not, though. Valimaki's defense partner is not skating today, and he looks like he could use more practice on the blueline than Kylington.

Despite the fear of this being another Bennett thread you're right and wrong. They never played him at 2c, and they never surrounded him with talent it was a big part of the reason he never came into his own. That said, he was never better than Monahan or Backlund and later on Lindholm.
Ultimately I don't find either player comparable, because one was trust into the NHL and the other the Flames have been very patient with. Kyllington will get his games. He has been in the system since he was 19 ( and playing at 19 in the AHL is remarkable), that is what makes it seem like forever, But 24 is still a child for D men in the NHL world. I trust Sutter's judgement and pitting Kyllinton and Valimaki against each other will be healthy for both players development and the compete on the team.

Especially with a huge gap before games.
Bottom line Kylington was a pleasant surprise, and with that was afforded a lot of ice time in the preseason and had some pretty good results. The key though is who fits with either Stone or Gudbranson, and they need to see that.
Kylington's last game wasn't his best, so this is hardly Larry Robinson getting sat down.
Kylington got 75 preseason five on five minutes to Valimaki's 47. He's been given every chance.

I think you meant to say 'who did absolutely zero in that role when given an opportunity over 6 years' ?

Kylington has also already played nearly 100 NHL games.

If Pitlick and Richardson aren't able to play on Saturday, which appears likely at this point, they will have a hole to fill at forward for the season opener. Their options are either to put Pitlick on LTIR and recall Duehr, or play 7 d-men.
Of the d-men available, the one who would be best-suited to playing some forward shifts is Kylington. He could still be cycled through the D during the game and when Darryl shortens the bench late in the game.

I don't think the choice is being made between Gudbranson and Kylington right now. It is between Kylington and Valimaki.
