Sure they can talk. But if they are out of the playoffs, with no Eichel trade or signs of signing Tkachuk or any other signs of improvement, he could easily change his mind.
I hope he remains a Flame. I just think that a lot can happen this season to have a big affect on his decision

Because how many players who are first time FA's actually don't test the waters to see what kind of a payday is out there?
As a player, and an elite one at that, why would you do yourself the disservice of not knowing what options you have? Especially when you have only made it technically to the second round of the playoffs once in your career with the team that drafted you.

My personal opinion is Treliving is focused clearly on Eichel right now and once that is settled one way or another his primary focus will shift to extending Johnny which should happen in the next 1-2 months. Purely my speculation but if the team does get Eichel it becomes imperative they keep Johnny long term in my opinion

A lot of players do that. Barkov just made that decision as did Zibenijad. Every single year the pending free agent crop dwindles as key players extend with their current teams.
I would say in a typical year maybe 1 of the top 5 pending UFA’s actually get to free agency.

A lot can happen this season to sway his decision one way or another. I think if his and the managements mind was 100% made up on this, he would have a new contract signed already
|
Exactly.
If he wants to stay (as stated), and the Flames want him to stay (as stated)....deal would be done.
So something is preventing that from happening.
Knowing that it is most likely term over dollars at this point ($$ should be pretty cut and dry by now using comparables) then the team (or JG) has to acquiesce on term. Are the Flames willing too?
If not, why would he not wait and see who else will give him the term he seeks? It costs him nothing to do this.
This doesn't mean it wont happen but there is every reason to believe that it will considering all the factors and seeing where we are on the calendar.

I do think Eklund is a better asset for the Sabres than anything the Flames have. I just don’t think Eichel turns the Sharks around and they are just buried in bad deals
|
I guess, but I honestly think all the Monahan talk is crazy for the same reason. If we’re getting Eichel, we’re losing Tkachuk.

Sorry, I meant to include players playing for a Canadian team with limited success. Both those players play in great locations, each has their own reason (Tax, NYC!), not to mention both of those players wear a letter for the team they re-signed with.
In my opinion, players that are without a letter, on teams with little to no progress when it comes to postseason success tend to explore free agency more often than the ones in situations like above.

Ya maybe but then it really doesn’t make sense to me unless it is a similar situation where there is a third team involved. Buffalo likely has no interest in Tkachuk because of his contract status which could have them paying Tkachuk more than Eichel or trading him in the next year and a half. If Tkachuk is on the table from the flames then there is not a ton of adds from Calgary. I don’t see us moving Tkachuk+Valimaki+Coronato+1st or that deal would have been done.
I could see it in a 3 team deal where a third team is sending the main future assets Buffalo wants and receiving Tkachuk.
I don’t think Eichel to Calgary makes sense without at least 1 more team in the deal. Only way I can see Buffalo going after Matthew is if they can also get Brady and then lock the brothers up for 6-8 years.

I was convinced Johnny was gone ever since he signed that 6 year deal and he was going to head to the States. I think there has been a sense of loyalty that he feels to the organization for drafting him and I believe he and his family have had first class treatment from the organization.
I just feel like it would be so much easier to say “we won’t negotiate in season” but the fact that has been denied by the agent and the team then I feel there is reason to remain hopeful.
I do put a lot of stock into the potential Eichel acquisition. If the Flames land Jack I think it makes it much easier for Johnny to see a brighter future here. The team would have a number 1 center, goalie and 4 Dmen under 25. Johnny riding shotgun with Eichel for the next several years would be enticing for him to stay. He also would be in a spot to chase all the major franchise milestones like games played, and points.

If we traded Tkachuk for Eichel I quite possibly would stop cheering for this team. Your getting rid of a guy still developing and still out produced Eichel recently, for a guy who may not even heal properly. There is no way Eichel in his current state is worth Tkachuk.

Even if you ignore Tkachuk's contract status which will definitely be a big issue down the road, Eichel is still more valuable than Tkachuk.

I understand this concern, however; an Eichel who is at 100% or say near 100% and plays center is more valuable than Tkachuk. And that’s the gamble

Fully healthy, yes. But he has to get a quite invasive surgery that has no garauntee he heals to 100%. You don’t trade away a guy on an upward trajectory for a guy who may of peaked wether it’s his fault or not. I stand by my stance that as he is right now. Eichel is not worth more then Tkachuk.

Sorry, didn’t you argue with me the other day that an unsigned Tkachuk still had a ton of trade value? Why does that only apply to the flames and not Buffalo?

Tkachuk has never out produced Eichel, and they're only a year apart. How is Tkachuk still developing and Eichel a finished product?
Injury recovery is obviously a risk, but chances are he will be fine.

That point stands but do you think Buffalo wants to trade their franchise player to a team for another guy they would have to trade in the summer? Does that make remote sense to you because it doesn’t for me.
I also don’t know how you can’t see how unsigned RFA’s don’t have value? You cheer for a team that have made their biggest trades in the last 7 years for unsigned RFA’s. Flames gave up a 1st and 2 2nds for one and gave up a top Dman, top 6 forward and top prospect for 2 more 3 years later.

Yes, I think they’d be interested in the best assets available regardless of if they need to move them again. No question.
I also never said that. The returns for those trades are less than they would have been for the same players a year earlier.

I also think Tkachuk would sign in Buffalo if they are a higher bid than St Louis. Seems like everyone is stuck that he wants to go home but the MO has been more the Tkachuks want their money.

Matthew's comments about Brady pulling a "classic Tkachuk" rubbed me the wrong way. Classic isn't the word I'd use. Ask Winnipeg what they think of Keith. That kind of attitude doesn't fly with Canadian fanbases. I understand it's a business but being so flippant about it irked me.
I'd personally drive the cab to the airport if trading Tkachuk got us Eichel.

I’d be shocked if Tkachuk was part of the trade proposal for Eichel. It really doesn’t make sense for either team. There’s no way Buffalo wants to take on that contract uncertainty when they’re rebuilding.
