Mentioned it in the trade thread but this seems like a massive overpay. $7.875M for a guy who had a 60pt pace as his best season doesn’t seem like a good deal

Good Deal. I like this for Montreal. He'll grow into this contract in short order.

Its a bit of a a gamble, but do you want to pay him $5 million for 2-3 years then pay him $8-10 if he blossoms and the cap goes up?

They must think they know what they have. Only 22 years old so progression is expected. That being said these second contracts are ridiculous.

It's the going rate to get a player locked up long term. I think some teams are getting spooked by bridge deals and would rather take the risk of the deal not working out long term over the risk of the player bolting to free agency as soon as possible and starting over again at center.

He is almost making $8M already with this extension.
I get it this is a risk that they think he will get much better and the cap will increase significantly. There is definitely risk here but to get a guy to commit long term in Montreal this is the price you pay

7.875 AAV seems like a lot for someone with a career high of 41 points.
But perhaps its worth the gamble for Montreal. If anyone deserves a long contract, it's Suzuki.

He's a good player but that's a bit much.
Taxes are crazy here though so I guess that comes into play a little.

Career high of 61 point pace...you can't fault him for the shortened season.
Still a bit of an overpayment, they are banking that he really breaks out this year and that this will look cheap longer term.
I like the player though, so think this will work out.

Can people stop posting a players highest point total as some sort of sound reasoning for their contract? I see it everywhere - there have been 2 shortened seasons - either points per game, or their 82 game point pace.

wow can't remember a contract I hated this much in a while. This is really not very good value at all.

Big gamble. Last year a 41 point player in 56 games - that's a 60 point pace, and it's easily his best effort so far (obviously not a lot of track record with COVID).

Yes, and really, probably could have done a bridge deal, and still come out ahead, assuming they didn't lose him!
Consider a bridge deal for 3X$5M ($15M over contract) and if proves worth it, a deal afterwards if he earns it of 5X10M (another $50M) total $65M paid...only $2M total paid more than this deal--the second contract could be an 8 year x $10M too if he'd sign it, doesn't change the comparable. If he doesn't earn it, the second contract is lower, and saves the team.
Only real gain for the team here, is that the cap hit would be lower in years 3 and onward.
Gain for Suzuki, is he could still sign another contract after this one too, as he will only be 31 when deal expires...if he doesn't earn another contract, he has banked $63M or how ever much he gets by time he is bought out.

A 60 point pace is not the same as actually getting 60 points. It's a smaller sample size.
This is especially relevant for someone like Suzuki who has only played 127 regular season NHL games in his career.
Kailer Yamamoto had a 79 point pace in 19-20. But he only had 26 points that season. He wasn't paid as such.
