Icon48 AHL hires 10 Female On-Ice Officials for this season

7 Referees and 3 lines-people

Working in the AHL is another step toward the possibility of female officials in the NHL, much like the NFL and NBA already have.

Time has come for this,

About time. This should have happened a long time ago. Hopefully they make the NHL soon.

I know it cuts into the budget, but they really should have an off-ice official for each game.

Can't hurt to move away from predominantly cranky middle aged white guys that need a refresher on the rulebook and a vision test.

Curious how this might impact breaking up fights.

Fights aren't the issue, it's the scrums. Once you jump in at the end of a one on one fight, it doesn't require any strength.

You need to be decently strong enough to separate the players before the fight.

That's the issue to me.

I think the standard of officiating in the NHL is not very good, so maybe some new blood will help

I expect the women will be just as terrible as their male counterparts.

As long as they refuse to hand the Oilers automatic late third period PPs every time they're behind at home, then they are welcomed here.

I watched the HW title fight between 6'9" Tyson Fury and 6'7" Deontay Wilder on the weekend and the referee was like a 5'6" 130 lb 60 year old dude and he had no problems throwing himself between them to separate them. Refs just have to have the respect of the competitors, don't have to be stronger than the competitors.

I had this concern too, but when I thought about it some more I came to the conclusion that the players need to be accountable for ending the fight, not the officials.

The second an official touches you the fight is done. End of story. You don’t fight or try push away from an official and I’d expect the players to be cognizant of the fact that they would be wrestling with a woman as opposed to a man.

There will likely be a learning curve as it’s going to be new for everyone but I don’t think it’s as big a barrier as it seems on the first thought.

Completely different scenarios. Boxers have to respect the referees or risk losing the fight. NHL linesman have to break up scrums with up to 10 players at one time. It will definitely be interesting to see, and all the power to them. I feel like players will give them more respect in these kind of situations anyway.

1 up 1 down. No more second guessing or letting the other guy official decide because they might have a better view.

Clean-up missed calls at the TV timeouts.

I actually think women line’s-persons and refs will have the advantage in scrums and fights as the players will respect them more. I think players will be less likely to put women in a precarious position and are more likely to listen to instruction. Will be interesting to watch.
