Seems steep for a guy his age but its just the cost of doing business that GM's themselves created.

When a player is on the verge of UFA, he’s going to get maximum term from some team. Teams always want to improve. So the term is as expected for a player of his ability.

out of the Eichel sweepstakes
add $9M for Fox, they will have 4 players making $8M+, likely $37-39M total

I like Zibanejad. His give-a-crap level is consistently high.

how many star players have the Sens traded away? Great scouts, poor management and owner

This is the term and money that I think it would take for Johnny to re-sign in Calgary .

Zibanejad was on pace for 60 goals just a year ago. Johnny was on pace for 60 points.

I don’t believe that the markets for both teams are equal,or even close to being equal, for ufa’s or upcoming ufa’s .

Good signing. Zibanejad is really underrated.

He'll be 29 when this contract starts, and he was a 25 goal and 50 point player before he got to ride Shot Gun with Panarin. He's had one great season, and two very productive sub PPG seasons. The Rangers will be looking to escape this contract within 5 years.

I agree. You can't help but wonder how that contract will age with Zibanejad being 28 now and 8 years to go after this one. Either way, worry about that later, and reap the rewards in the next 3-5 years.
I wouldn't be upset at all offering Johnny 8 years at 8-8.25 per. Anything under would feel like a steal.
Helps that two big contracts given out are in the 7.75-8.5 range are number 1 centers. Should help with Johnny being a winger.

I think the term is too long, but I also think the Rangers will be able to worm their way out of this deal by the time Zibanejad is 35 or so.

I'd rather have a borderline elite C who I have to plug my nose and sign to a big contract than...not have one at all.
I don't think this is bad at all, either.
2.5M less than Tavares. 1.35 < Seguin.

The intent isn’t to compete for 8 years. They’re loaded with talent right now, and need this guy part of it. Got it done.

Term is always going to be the killer here with these contracts.
I am not that big of a fan of him as some are, as every season I do wonder which Zibanejad will show up, but you can't argue with goal scoring, and the league always pays for goal scoring (unless your name is Laine and you only did that early in your career and you can't do much else).

Can we get Gaudreau for that? Would be a good deal if we could.
