I'm feeling something even worse than pessimism heading into this season....indifference.

All us Flames fans know what its like to play an 82 game season and finish just outside the playoffs, or just inside. Not bad enough for a good draft pick, not good enough to do any playoff damage.

A weak division and Sutter coaching could be enough to get in and go on a run. But there's an equal chance we miss the playoffs and draft 13th overall.

Just feels like Groundhog day cheering for this team. Would be nice to break that cycle, top 3 pick or a playoff run.

What about teams like Chicago? the hope in NY for the Rangers? The Florida Panthers. All these teams have finished at or near dead last and have been able to build or are building good teams that are or will compete.

Sutter gives me more hope than any acquisition since Hanifin/Lindholm. I don't think we contend this season but I think the team takes a big step.

On the other hand, 2 of our most valuable players are free agents in the next 2 seasons, and that gives me some stress as we could be thrown into a rebuild right as this team starts to round into form.

Was a little hopeful for Eichel but would no longer be very excited to get him since he didn't get surgery yet.

If we can resign at least one of gaudreau /Tkachuk and aquire or develop a good puck moving defenceman, I think the hope meter goes up. Might see some nice stats in the Junior and farm leagues as well. Wolf should be intriguing....I wonder why Flames fans won't get excited about this top 5 goalie prospect?

You’d have said the same thing about Calgary around the Bennett and Tkachuk draft. And everything was looking pretty good in mid 2018-19. People said Minnesota was going to be good, and now they are pretty mediocre. Columbus was on the rise and took a huge step back. And look north where they are perennially described as a talented up and coming team.

Spoiler!

Maybe we can ditch Harvey and bring in this guy as our mascot... seems fitting.

Still blows my mind how some teams never seem to be bad , like Boston, Pittsburgh and Washington. All those teams have traded away draft picks and prospects, while missing on some obvious picks . Especially Boston who traded Thornton and Seguin for spare parts and drafted a bunch of nobodies with 3 firsts in a row instead of Barzal and Connor . Mind bottling

Pittsburgh was bad for several years in a row before building their team through high draft picks and a generational player. They managed to sustain that because good players want to stay or go to winners, but all that started because they tanked for a few years. Before Lemieux and in between Lemieux and Crosby, no one wanted to go to Pittsburgh. Put Crosby in Buffalo, and Pittsburgh might not even have a team right now, while Buffalo would be the shining pearl that Pittsburgh is considered now. Washington is similar in that regard. They had to be pretty terrible in order to land probably the best natural goal scorer of our generation.

The league rewards teams that tank and damns ones that get stuck in mediocrity.

I just hope there is some face-punching. Watching that Netflix UHL mob doc has given me some hope. I would like the season to start the same way it started for the Trashers.
I am only half-joking. If we turn up the goonery, I would actually be more interested. At least it's something...

This is perfect bulletin board material for Darryl.
He eats this garbage for a 3 meals ....he will actually use it to motivate the players.

I love being the underdog....every single time.

Lessening the amount of expectations we have for this team seems to be the best way for us here at CP headquarters.

When you come prepared and just wear the brown pants for every single game and realize you didn't need to crap your pants every single game .....it turns out better.

I'm telling ya.....secret ingredient to watching this team is to lower your expectations by about 40% we look like world beaters and you'll be much happier.

Just start drinking on game days at 8am man by game time nothing matters ....we lost 13 to 2 .....pffft.....were still going to win the Stanley CUP.

Just like the leafs ....and Oilers every single year.

Marchand and Pasternak kind of out of nowhere, plus Vezina goaltending, Selke centring and Chara. Makes up for a few mistakes.

And even their fans are more optimistic than Flames fans
and when that team has had roughly as much (if not more) playoff success as Calgary over the past decade, you start to understand why

I think this is the worst for the ownership and management. When fans start to just not care, you have a real issue. If the question is “what do you think about…” and a common reply is “it never crosses my mind because I don’t think about the Flames” it’s not good.

But what can we expect? It’s a culture of mediocrity, and a franchise that’s had one good run in 30 years with really nothing to suggest that there are good times ahead.

Can call it cherry picking but in the last 15 years they have won more rounds then the Flames

Since their move to Arizona in 97, we have 2 more rounds.

Maybe it's the straw that will break Jack Eichels back. Errr, I mean the Jack Eichel trade camels back.

In the eight years since Florida drafted Sasha Barkov they have won four playoff games. Between 2010–14 the Panthers selected third, third, second and first in the NHL entry draft, and are only now looking like they might have a team that could contend for a Stanley Cup. Their top-six scoring forwards from last year are 26, 26, 26 27, 28 and 34 years old.

Drafting at the top certainly helps, and drafting at the top multiple times helps more. But in their entire 27-year history the Florida Panthers have only once played playoff games in the second round (1996), and since then have won a total of eight games in the post-season. For as much as a team can plan for it, becoming a legitimate Stanley Cup contending team has a lot more to do with good fortune and happy turns of events than it does with shrewd strategy. The history of the NHL is littered with teams that have bottomed out and gone nowhere.

Oh you mean 15 years ago? When these tems actually sucked. I was talking about their current success but thanks for the history lesson.

It's also good to know that this mascot won't have a tail for the Oilers to rip out
