Yep, this checks out. Darryl Sutter magic is pretty much what this year comes down to from a hope perspective, and hopefully that pays off. Oh, and the hope that we acquire Eichel.
I am looking forward to a full season under Sutter. At the very least that's something to look forward to. Even it means less scoring, we can probably expect a consistent system and a concrete team identity.

Does anyone really see this roster winning a championship? I sure don’t. It’ll be a stretch to make the playoffs, and if they do it’s a quick out as it always is.

Mediocre team is mediocre.

Seems about right. I have been a fan of this team since they moved here and this is by far the lowest my enthusiasm/expectations have ever been. I think I’ve watched about 5 minutes of preseason hockey. Normally I’m all in. I don’t even know when their first regular season game is.

Apathy is the word

I like to think of it as our team overachieving in comparison to our expectations! So we should be happy right?

Hard to argue with that ranking. At least most of the fanbase (CP at least) isn't lying to themselves and is pretty realistic about the situation. The team lost their captain. The 2 biggest starts on the team are going into the last year of their contracts and eyeing UFA status. The #1C is a question mark. This season's hope is resting on the laurels of a goalie who is injured often, and hoping the head coach can turn water into wine. The team is likely going to be bottom for offence.

30th place seems about right. I also agree with Buffalo being 31st. At least we aren't like them...

Because most of the teams on the playoff bubble appear to have plans for how to get off said bubble.

This says more about the fans than anything to do with the roster or team construction. We gotta face facts most flames fans are pissy pants sour faced critics. Except for you guys! You guys are great!

Spoiler!

the surveyed fans level of optimism is one thing and results are another.

While the Flames are not going to finish 2nd last in the league, I think it is the lack of many changes, outside of Coleman, in the off season has tempered expectations...

9th to 7th in the conference is, imo, the range this team will finish...

It's funny because I feel a whole heck of a lot more optimistic this year with Sutter than I did going into last season with Ward, even with the same core. No beach ball soccer and tunes at practice to get ready for games this year.

I would assume that Sutter is printing off all of the articles like this one and using it as a motivating tool on the players. Flames versus the world type mentality.

There is absolutely zero reason to be excited about this team, so not really a shock.

Isn't that the narrative every year under wunderkind turned hanger-on Brad Treliving? The product is garbage so just punt the coach and buy yourself another 2 seasons every time.

Really, it's a genius shtick to master if you have the stomach for it. Imagine if you were completely awful at your job, never achieving results of any substance, and just continually fired and hired those that you've tasked with polishing your turd into gold to save your own skin.

Steady as she goes Brad. Steady as she goes.

I understand why some of the glass half full posters get frustrated with the growing number of unhappy fans but as you can see it's not just posters here frustrated with the team. Most Flames fans have moved on from this core of players and are waiting for change.

Fans have seen this narrative 10x before (probably an under sale) and this is just another season of lather, rinse, repeat. Treliving's bar for the franchise has gone from rebuilding - perennial contender - bubble team all while really attaining no tangible success along the way.

2-3 years ago he was selling us all on this group being 'the group' and now the best we can hope for is a sneak in season? Says it all right there.

What is there to be optimistic about?

We're making no real change or improvement to a core of players that have their moments but don't have that extra gear to get us anywhere in the postseason through several attempts together.

The team has a history of hanging on to good players for too long, getting sub optimal return or just letting important players walk to free agency in order to go all in on a one round playoff run. And now it's unclear whether they'll be able to lock up Gaudreau or Tkachuk long term and no one has stepped up to indicate that either is close or that the players intents to stay are legitimate to help alleviate that concern as for all we know we're quietly playing away Johnny's finally schedule in Flames silks.

We are constantly given lip service without meaningful action and asked to trust a management group that has worked diligently to keep this group toiling in mediocrity for years without the ability to get better (because they only tinker on the fringes) or allow them to bottom out to draft where truly good players get taken.

They've kept us in hockey purgatory, expect us to pay to come watch 2-1 hockey games at the best of times and despite having a number of assets on their hands with questionable futures here, can't appear to put together a package for the type of elite 1C that only becomes available via trade once in a blue moon.

Of course we're pessimistic.

So do something about it Flames.

Do something.
