Over the years I have noticed that almost all talk radio and some tv media shows always bring in one guy that is just a moron when it comes to the topic they are covering, especially sports. I don't understand why this seems to be a trend but it seems to exist.

Kind of a fluff piece, but the Athletic predicts one player from every team that will be moved this season. They predict Zadorov for the Flames:
Quote:
Calgary Flames: Nikita Zadorov
The Flames traded for Zadorov from Chicago this summer, but only signed him to a one-year contract — likely due to his camp asking for too much money or term. So, he’ll be a UFA come next summer and a likely rental candidate by the trade deadline. -Hailey Salvian

I think this, you think this, but will management think this. I don't have a lot of faith in this team and even less in management. I think we are in for one very disappointing year.

I think the argument will be around the interpretation of "out of it by the deadline".

As long as someone here posts the "so you're saying there's a chance" gif, they won't be sellers.

I would assume Gaudreau's contract will play a role in things.
If they're a half dozen points back with a week to go and Gaudreau not signed they may have to be sellers as the best way forward.

Disregarding value:

Monahan + Zadorov = same thing
Buffalo takes on a short term contract that can be flipped at the deadline for picks.
Plus, the Flames have a lot of low-end depth on defense.

That shows why I don't have faith in management. The "line in the sand" should have been this offseason when they could have dealt him anywhere, now he has all the control. I think if they're in that position, they become buyers to try and make it. They'll have to be a bottom 3 team to be sellers.

Update to this. Aljamain Sterling was not medically cleared to compete later this month and was pulled from the fight booked for October 30th which is 198 after he underwent the same surgery.
Even at an optimistic 100 days, that takes Eichel to the third week of January with surgery today. At 200 days he is out for the regular season but could return in the playoffs.
Sources: Aljamain Sterling pulled from UFC title fight due to injury
According to sources, Sterling (20-3) was denied medical clearance by doctors for the five-round fight. The UFC has not announced an official change to the card, but is discussing the creation of an interim title in Sterling's absence, per sources. The UFC 267 event will still take place on Oct. 30 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
...
"As always, I like to share the truth and be transparent with my fan base that actually give a s--- about fighters health," Sterling posted on Instagram. "Training has been going well but I've been struggling to get my body to push pass 2 RDs in sparring sessions. The fatigue that sets in and the cramping still lingers, which my surgeon said is due to the nerves still recovering from the long-term trauma, and surgery I just had. Nothing I can do about that, other than show up in another shell of myself and risk wasting the surgery and maybe getting severely hurt!!"

April 15th - surgery
April 26th - resume cardio
May 6th - light bodyweight exercise and physio
May 10th - light weightlifting
May 17th - resume pad work
June 24th - resume light sparring
August 5th - cleared to resume full sparring (112 days)
August 9th - cleared to participate in wrestling tournament (116 days)
October 30 - Official return to competition (198 days)
Based on that - no formal education or experience - something just under or around 100 days seems likely. If he gets surgery tomorrow that takes him to the third week of November at earliest and causes him to miss about 1/4 of the season plus another 5-10 games getting timing and everything back. Obviously teams are taking that into account.
That is in comparison to Eichel's doctor, who has a vested interest, suggesting 8-12 weeks in an episode of the 31 Thoughts Podcast.

I just don’t think the flames will be in a sellers position by the trade deadline. What if the flames are comfortably in a playoff spot at the trade deadline? I don’t think the flames should be selling off their players at that point just because they are going to be UFAs.

I just hope that if the Flames are out of it, that they are WAY out of it.
Last thing we need is some bubble team floating around just outside the playoff picture enticing management to hang onto everyone in hopes of an improbable late run.
If this isn't going to be a playoff team I would hope there isn't a single pending UFA left on the roster after the deadline, and that the Flames have a minimum of 12 picks going into the '22 draft.

I have a hard time seeing this team being way out of it. They are a bubble team at worst unless they are decimated with injuries in my opinion

If Gaudreau doesn't have a contact in place by then, you have to exploit trading him then weigh your options.
Brian Burke explained it perfectly IMO. If you get offered 10 first round picks for him, would you do it? The answer is usually yes, so it shows you are willing to move him. Find out what you can get and go from there.

The same Brian Burke who refused to trade Cammaleri, who then walked for nothing?

He made the same mistake a lot of GMs did by overvaluing the player and the team. If they have the "just get in because anything can happen" mentality, he will end up walking with no return. The 9nly reason to keep an unsigned star player past the deadline is if you're a powerhouse team or on an incredible hot streak.

I agree.
Hopefully they stay healthy and have a surprisingly great season, but if they aren't going to make it I hope the wheels fall completely off. Force this team to go in a direction rather than waste assets and watch them walk away as UFA's

Yes, but the reason he didn't trade him was because he didn't like the price. Same argument.

I think there is actually a lot of anecdotal evidence to suggest that there was a "line in the sand," and that by the time Gaudreau's NTC kicked in both signs were really confident about re-signing him. We have been hearing a lot recently about how much the Flames have been involved all summer in trying to get a deal done to acquire Jack Eichel, and there is little doubt that this played a huge role in the extension negotiations with Gaudreau. For all we know, this is still an key component to making a final decision on the term and value of a new contract for Gaudreau.
