I mean, is it really that much of a shock that a guy like McDavid (or Gretzky for that matter) whines as much as they do or did?

They've spent their entire career and life to this point being told that they are the best, above everyone else. Of course they have an inflated (to be mild) opinion of themselves and feel that they can do no wrong and everyone else should bend to their will.

Yeah, say what you want about reuniting McDrai, or about double-shifting the top PP unit in a pre-season game, or about playing McDrai 30 mins (or whatever their ice time was), the reality is that the Oilers completely took over the second half of the game.

Having said that, Sutter's post-game comments did resonate with me (to a degree anyway). A couple of mistakes in the second period really turned the game, and those mistakes are 100% correctable, and I have no doubt whatsoever that Sutter will correct them. I wasn't sure I agreed about his "bad call" comments, and he seemed to double-down on the goalie interference call. I thought his Coaches Challenge there was not good and put a team and PP unit with momentum right back on the power-play. I agreed with his comments about this game being a "no-hitter", but can't for the life of me think that that was the game plan.

So in the end, it's a pre-season game that contained some important lessons. There were also bright spots: Top line obviously, more promising depth (Lewis/Richardson) compared to last year, and Kylington continues to thoroughly impress.

That free lane to the net crap was over the top. Whoever said it has zero credibility.

Was it a Ron MacLean special?

Looks like the Oilers and McBabyBack &*%$# are already planting the seed to get some favourable officiating this season.

Honestly, next time I hope Tanev or somebody else blows him up with a good clean check, don't even look at the puck.

Let's not forget that Darryl is a master at making slight comments to officials for the next game.

I just managed to watch the play that McDavid has been harping about. It's the same play that he made in the first period, and the same play that I've seen him do multiple times last year. He drives the net and goes straight for the goalie. If anyone gets in his way, it's the defenders fault for not letting him rush the net unimpeded.

It's only in the last couple of years that there wouldn't be a defensman there trained and experienced in taking the head off of a player that tried that move. Eventually, he will try to go wide against a defenseman and find his partner waiting for him in front of the net. I don't feel bad for the future injury that McDavid is going to sustain when that happens. It's a very dangerous play, and it's starting to get predictable.

Gaudreau leaves the game after having his wrist hacked yet the Oilers are whining. Maybe don't drive the net like that in a preseason game. His supposed almost career ender was also in a meaningless game.

On the play in question I find it quite frustrating because the right call was made. McDavid ended up plowing the goalie because the defenseman tripped him, trying to do his job, preventing him from blitzing the net in the first place. There is really nothing within the rules to prevent someone from getting hurt in that situation. It would be fine if McDavid was endangering just his own health, but Markstrom could have been seriously hurt as a result of his insistence on driving the net like he does.

Next time he tries that, Markstrom should stand him up a la Tim Thomas on Henrik Sedin.

That's awesome ^^. Flames should put some big fat plug in net against the oilers one time just to do that.

If McDavid hurts himself, is he the Josh Archibald of crease crashing?

If there was no goal the ref's arm would have gone up to signal a penalty on Tanev. I'm sure both refs were thinking, "okay, I gotta call this one.... oh. never mind".

Quite often a ref raises hand to signal a penalty but the offensive team scores and the ref waives off the penalty call because the penalty happened before the goal. So in this instance, I think we have stuff that happens quite a bit. A penalty happens, the ref doesn't get a chance to signal penalty because the puck goes in the net, so they don't call the penalty. The penalty still occurred before the goal.

Yet, he still wants a call...

His whining game is strong. He whines to make things easier for him. He needs to make things easier because he can't win.

I still say it is a reckless play for McDavid to do that. Eventually he is going to get caught or pushed just enough and break another collarbone on the end boards or on the goalpost. Then there will be outrage because of 'x' dirty player who ended McDavid's career!

It is a stupid reckless play he keeps on doing over and over again, even after he gets hurt, and he can't understand why the other team just doesn't part the seas for him. If he ever played defence, maybe he would start to understand.

I just hope the Flames are not a part of the big one.

Andersson is still looking like he did last year, so far, which is definitely a concern.

My biggest complaint whit his game though, is on the PP. I don't mind him on the line (in the offensive zone), he has pretty good vision passing it around. But he is awful as the guy carrying the puck through the neutral zone. Terrible. The D knows he is not going to try to carry it over the blueline (he doesn't have the speed), so they just wait for him and he basically skates up to them, turns around to find someone to pass to, and usually just coughs it up.

I think they need to take him off the PP, and I think it will alleviate some stress from his game.

I wouldn't worry about Rasmus.

I would worry about how terrible our defence is after Hanifan, Andersson, Tanev and Kylington.
