Pretty certain the Oilers D play will not ameliorate.

Very confident the Flames D play will .

Valuable lesson? The Flames will learn nothing from this as this is what they do. I'm not mad about the loss in a game that doesn't count but it's a bit concerning that with nearly a full roster they pick up from last season where they just can't put a 60 minute effort together.

Oilers learn these sort lessons at the end of their seasons.

Default Preseason #6. Flames @ Oilers 7pm MT. calgaryflames.com

I hate to hear Gaudreau was injured from a slash. I know it’s just precautionary so I hope everything is ok.

But in a preseason game that means nothing and the oilers choose to slash our star player to that level… why not return the favour? Forget anything else for the rest of the game. The sole purpose of every flame could just be to hack away at McDavid until he has to leave the game for the same reason. Two men on him at all times slashing at him viciously. The team was winning at that point anyways and you could gain far more from sending a message back than trying to win a meaningless game.

I know it’s not practical and you never see anything like that. I’m just frustrated. Always feels like every time Johnny is on a role… teams start hacking and hacking. Refs will call at best 1 out of every 20 slashes on him. With those odds… it’s worth the risk for teams to do that to him.

Don't wanna get ahead of myself but I see 0 reason why Kylington can't be one of this team's best defenceman for years to come. I know it's just pre season but he looks like a different player this year.

If he doesn't make the team, I think I will be done with this team.

Tanev + Kylington > Tanev + Zadorov

We will have 7 or 8 new players so you can't say they won't learn anything. This is a different team from last season.

Did anyone lay the lumber on McDavid or Dry cycle?

Troubling part of this game to me was that Markstrom played great and the skaters didn’t help him at all. Gave up waaaaay too much chances, and what offence we did generate came from one line with pretty much no one else generating anything of consequence.

Freidman said on his podcast “small players have to prove they are good while big players have to prove they are bad” and I feel that really sums up what’s going on with the Flames blue line this preseason

they only played half a game, but were good for that half - continuing to show progression through the pre-season

Kylington's growing confidence is very encouraging

Johnny has been good, Tkachuk was really good tonight

Kylington is turning into a huge story. He's using both his head and his wheels effectively now, which was the key to him filling out his potential. What a blessing, because the d-corps would be in much more trouble without him stepping up. Zadorov may change the odd game with a hit, but he's not filling any voids otherwise.

These defensive pairings are difficult to come up with.

I do not want Andersson on the top pairing - he is too often a liability out there.

Kylington has been nothing but damn good, but does he really go from '7th-8th defencemen' to 'top pairing'? That's asking a lot from him, and probably setting him up to fail.

Zadorov has been a trainwreck so far in transition and in defence. It is really showing why Zadorov wasn't protected, and has been moved around a bit.

Gudbranson has been better than Zadorov IMO, but don't mistake that with a glowing endorsement.

Tanev has been good, and I expect Hanifin to be good as well (and he was tonight, especially considering it was his first game back).

Well, I said it a bunch of times before, I am very happy that Sutter is the coach. If anyone can get this group of defencemen playing well, it is going to be Sutter. Somewhere in all of this is going to be 3 solid pairings somehow. I don't know how, but somehow Sutter will make it work.

Did Markstrom suck? He needs to be good for the Flames to have a chance.

No, he was very good. The defensive coverage and positioning was poor though.

If that's the case - it doesn't seem like much has changed since last season.. not sure why it would.
