Yeah you can always say next year, but some injuries etc can derail things similar to the home field issue this year.

And with the division they are in, the Yanks and Sox are perpetually reloading/spending money. Tampa isn't going anywhere either with their young talent. So the Jays can be better than this year and because of the division, still come up short next year. Within an inning or two, in Washington, this year of getting to 163.

Rogers need to petition MLB to get into the Central like Illitch covinced MLB to do with Detroit.

Yeah, this division is straight up a murderers row and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

If anything it'll get worse as Baltimore starts improving while they bring along their top ranked farm system.

This might not be the last time a 90+ win team misses the playoffs here in the AL East

Yeah I’d keep Semien too and let Ray go. But I think having one of them is better than none so if Semien doesn’t stay i guess Ray would be fine. I am very hesitant about giving Ray big term though. The problem with Semien is I think he wants to go back to SS and Bo is actually pretty solid there now. Maybe if Bo offers to move? Dunno we’ll see how it unfolds.

I have hopes with the possibility of a universal DH that they might look at shifting the divisions as there likely wont be a distinct National vs American league anymore. The Jays are more natural rivals with the likes of Detroit and Minnesota than they ever were with the Yanks and Red Sox. It's a pipe dream though because they want lesser profile teams to get rolled by the Yanks and Sox every year so they don't cause a stink.

But with Montreal coming into the mix you could have a "AL North" if you shifted things around and had Toronto, MTL(Tampa), Detroit, Minnesota and Milwaukee. I think it would make for some neat geographical and cultural rivalries.

And this has been discussed before, but a decision has to be made on Montoya.
Do you take the next step with a more prominent manager going into next season?

If the Jays struggle to start the season with a hangover, and they replace CM then (with whoever is available then), have they blown next year too?

I tell ya. The first time in my life I ever cried about a sports result was in '87, when the Bell/Barfield Jays lost out to the Tigers in the last weekend of the season. My 10-year-old self would be an absolute mess watching today's games.

I don't think they should pay big money for Semien.

They already forked out a massive deal for a 30+ year old position player. I wouldn't do it again.

I just took a look at the free agent pitchers this year and wow, some big veteran names available. Would be nice to get Kershaw, but assuming he stays in LA, I'd love to get Scherzer on the relatively cheap, then spend money on Matz and Graveman. The bullpen has to be upgraded exponentially. If they can do that, along with a full season of Springer, the loss of Semien and/or Ray can be averted.

That was unfortunately already decided before this season even started.

https://www.cbc.ca/sports/baseball/m...0on%20Tuesday.

I want him replaced too and hope I'm wrong but I don't think Rogers would be too pleased with the front office wasting money they didn't really need to so they'll bring him back and hope the team does a little better and gets in.

Not sure there is a case to be made to not bring him back.

This team almost made the payoffs in a year where they were never expected to be this close.

The club already picked up his option for next year i believe i read a couple months back.

This team, as has been mentioned many times, had to move and play their home games in 3 different ball parks in the middle of a pandemic. I cant imagine the stress on the guys with families though all that stuuf, but Montoya kept them in line and focused.

I think the job he did was commendable considering the circumstances.

Shapiro/Athkins are fans from what I can tell and likely are ging to ride with him and give him a chance to see what he can do with a very young group through a "normal" year.

I think you add all that up and there is virtually no scenario where he is fired.

I would be shocked if Montoyo is replaced. Frankly I think the vitriol towards Montoyo is unwarranted. Obviously some tactical moves were questionable but there are a lot of things working in his favour. Their record has improved by a huge margins every year he has managed. Multiple players are having career years with him at the helm. The team was basically without a home for months and managed to keep the team fighting for a playoff spot in the toughest division in all of baseball. They had an insane run differential. For those hoping he leaves I would dramatically temper your expectations.

I don't think they should bring back either Semien or Ray as they will be both seeking $100 million dollar contracts, that's why this year stings so bad. There's no reason to think either of them will repeat this seasons success in the years to come. Baseball, more then any other sport is saturated with one season wonders on huge, long term contracts. Semien and Ray were the two best deals in the league this season and the team still only finished 4th in the division.

I would say best non playoff team ever in baseball since the addition of the WC game.

The takeaway that I hope the team has from this season is how important it is to get the smallest things right. This team is made up of a lot of guys who never needed to master the fundamentals because their talent could compensate for some weaknesses in their game.

They missed by such a tiny margin that had they won any of the games that they failed to move a baserunner, lay down a bunt, or complete a double play, they’d be in the playoffs and this team could have done serious damage there.

It's all about TV ratings.

KC (twice), Cleveland, TB, have been in the WS recently. Not big markets.

Yeah, 4th in a division where 4 teams had 91+ wins. That's still a great year, especially when they were not seriously considered to be a playoff team due to big holes in the pitching staff and a lot of question marks around a young lineup.

Seriously, someone needs to look it up. Has there ever been a division where 4 teams had 90+ wins? That seems like a near impossibility given that the divisional teams play each other so much.
