Hey biased media is the norm now. There is no such thing as objective media anymore. I was justifying your bias. You have biases, you can’t ignore that, it’s not about the fighting, it’s about you having strong biases for players like Phillips and strong biases against players like Gudbranson and when I say players like Gudbranson I don’t mean players who fight, I mean role type players who don’t put up points.

I think you are a good writer, you are probably already better than a guy like Eric Francis who also has his biases in other ways. Bias is just the way it is now.

Sorry Scorp for chiming in, first of all, I'm totally fine with the fact that you disagree with fighting in hockey and wanted it outlaw. But in this specific reply, you said Mackey is big guy and fully capable of defending himself. So, if Mackey did defend himself by fighting MacEwen, then it's ok with you? It's still fighting though, wasn't it? Or I misunderstood, you are against Grubrandson taking the instigating penalty? If this the case, why bring concussion into the debate? Honest question.

As a known professional writer posting your own opinion on a sports forum that ties you to your brand. It may not be fair but when you comment on your profession and a team you cover it's entirely fair to tie you to that profession thru personal options regarding that profession.

Wouldn't love the fight to begin with but Gudbranson made it worse by creating a mismatch. Gudbranson is an experienced fighter who has 2-3 inches on MacEwen (who's just himself breaking into the league, like Mackey). Seems to me that would make a head injury even more likely.

This is fine, have no issue with this whatsoever. If me being against fighting is part of my brand... fine by me.

They are not a avoidable. You just take hits out of the games. Period that simple . You say they are part of the game which fights are too.

Remove both then we cut down concussions in a much larger way.

Hockey's different as most players are big and tall. You can't just assume because a players big he can fight. It's not part of there came most likely.

Same goes for littler players . Can't assume they can't fight because they are small. Tootoo was great at it. I remember watching him when Brandon came to Medicine hat . Dude could throw.
Yeah, sometimes... but I'm not assuming Mackey can fight. He did it multiple times with Stockton last year (I watched all of them).

If Mackey didn't want to fight that's fine but I don't think Gudbranson needed to do anything more than a few shoves to the body with the gloves on. Did the situation really warrant a full-on beatdown? Not even close, IMO. But that's all I have to say about that.

We were the biggest baby #### team in the league last season. This is why adding players like Gudbranson, Zadorov, and Coleman will help us win - we’ll be hard to play against. And we’ll be better for it.

If MacEwen didn’t want the scrap or potential CTE, he could’ve taken the clean hit and moved on.

I believe hitting needs to evolve to be more about checking and retrieval of the puck and anything beyond that should be a penalty

I think that’s highly unrealistic within the context of hockey.

I used to think that, but since the advent of high-level women's hockey, I've come to believe that if you start teaching all children to play the same style it would probably take.

Then we should cut off stick blades (high sticking can cause concussions) and play with big blue rubber rings (because pucks are hard and have caused concussions)!

This whole conversation is a joke.

I absolutely loved the Zadorov hit and Gudbranson stepping up. Other things I liked. The team looked to be moving the puck faster and were much more tenacious in puck battles.
For a team trying to establish an identity, it's important they play like this during the preseason. Find an identity, get off to a good start, learn to play that way every night and establish a reputation as being hard to play against. All these things are important if you want to build a winning culture and overcome the adversity that comes from a long season. Good game to build on.

First part just isn’t true. We already had Lucic, Ritchie, and Rinaldo on the team last season.

Guys like Coleman and Zadorov help because they can actually take a regular shift while providing a bit of an edge.

A guy like Gudbranson doesn’t bring anything that guys like Lucic or Ritchie don’t already bring. And unless he takes steps forwards under Sutter he makes our d-core worse in terms of actual play.

Flames finished 16th in the NHL in PIMs last year. Nowhere near last.

But there's no correlation between taking penalties and having playoff success. The final four teams in the playoffs finished 1st, 13th, 20th, and 29th in PIMs in 2020–21.

Agree that removing both would help eliminate concussions to a greater extent. But Fighting and hitting are not even close to the same realm when it comes to being “part of the game”. It’s just a straw man argument that people use to defend fighting when really it’s not part of the game.

Maybe at one point in the future the game could evolve to being more like the women’s game with no hitting but that’s a structural change to the sport that would beed to happen at youth levels to start.

You could take fighting out of every level of hockey starting tomorrow and the game wouldn’t change at all. It’s already illegal, it just needs to be penalized more severely and you could get rid of it completely.

And I say this as a complete hypocrite. I love a good hockey fight (a real one that happens naturally, not the staged BS) but from a player safety perspective and in terms of it actually being a valuable part of the sport it really could be eliminated tomorrow with no real impact.

You hate fighting, which is fine. But you let that get to you and then you post emotional #### like this.
