Calling out Gudbranson as if he did something wrong was the problem. The guy was trying to fight Mackey for a clean hit not some innocent bystander.
Maybe next time he takes a clean hit and moved on
One bad take isn't a career ended though...look at Francis he has bad takes every day!
Doubtful.
In the end he got his team a power play in that exchange. And he was looking for a fight so they gave him exactly what he wanted.
If you going to have a “send a message” fight and take an instigator then I’d much rather they go grab somebody who is slashing Johnny’s hands and punch his face in.
I don’t think fighting Macewen who’s role is also to fight and be a bit of an agitator really does anything.
Especially since in the end that ended up in a positive outcome for his team.

Beyond what everyone is arguing about, one thing is clear: Gudbranson was brought in specifically to play the role that he played tonight. And Sutter wants him to play that role. Whether or not you like it, it’s not just Gudbranson acting on his own, he was recruited and is being coached to play this exact role. He performed his role well tonight.

Or maybe he’s allowed to have a different opinion than you.
Fighting in a preseason game is pretty useless and honestly it’s pretty much useless 95% of the time in a normal game too.
I’m fine if Gudbranson does that in a regular season game, but honestly not sure there is really a point in risking getting hurt there in a preseason game and fighting a guy who’s going to be an AHLer
And guess what…Scorp is already getting paid to write about hockey, hence he’s already a professional hockey writer.
Meaning more people have already paid to hear his take on the sport than will ever pay to hear about your takes on the sport.
And Jiri says it down below but more should be written about the long term impacts of head trauma and CTE and fighting should be eliminated if they truly have the players best interests in mind.
Yes that's right. And readers' criticism is part of the territory.

It is preseason and that is when you can send a message without repercussions. That is something Gudbransson had to do in that situation, it is building on the team identity with players playing and having each others back. At no point should Mackey have to fight in that situation. Canuck player thought he could take exception and instead was fed the business.
Otherwise that was a really nice game for the Flames... I'd really like to see 58 and 8 stick together, that pairing is fantastic. Both guys at their best IMO

I’m looking forward to Gudbranson flipping the puck to Muzzin then tuning him
Kassian, Doughty and Muzzin are going to get wrecked this year if they even attempt to pull the stunts they have in the past.
You have to imagine Tkachuk is very happy with managements' work this offseason given that he will not have to fight any battles without backup ever again.
Our monsters clearly have no qualms with getting involved.
And maybe it would be good if more writers understood the impacts of head trauma
If he wants to write about head trauma, then write about head trauma.
But if he is going to write that Gudbranson's contribution to the game from that sequence was getting a 2 minute penalty for instigation, then he's going to get criticized.
Has everyone turned into special flowers?

Yeah that was a worthwhile interception by Gudbranson IMO. Mackey doesn't need to fight there and it looked like Macewan was about to jump him, Gudbranson stepped in and sent a message.
Nobody got hurt and a vet sent a message to the team they're not going to get pushed around. It's not much, but I liked the gesture as much as I dislike the idea of Gudbranson being on the team in general.

If you could design a defense pairing in a lab... it would be pretty close to those two and how they've complemented each other.
Expect Kylington to stumble along the way still, but there's something there for sure.

Hard disagree. Clean hit and he wanted to go and Gudbranson obliged. If the other team wants to fight after every hit then the Flames can chuck em.
