You don't really believe a day goes by that they don't regret that mistake do you?

As with Tkachuk, Pettersson is in the driver's seat on where he's going to play long term. Personally I believe bridge deals handed to franchise players is asset mismanagement. This is the one thing the Oilers have done right as if they handed Draisaitl and McDavid bridge deals they would be massively screwed today. Benning put himself in this situation and this is on him.

No, they wouldn't. EP would be chosen by more GMs - I don't doubt that at all. He's a center, and his skillset is elite. He'll put up the points.

So do you think that means any players the Flames missed out on drafting that they still don't want... I don't know, I think I'd take Nikita Kucherov... I mean, we did skip over him multiple times in the draft so it must mean the Flames still think he's not that great.

EP is a first line Center. Flames are trying to trade Tkachuk for a first line Center or atleast fans have him in a lot of packages for Eichel.

You make it sound like GM's always have a choice. Treliving would have loved to sign Tkachuk for 8 years, it was not in the cards. I assume that Pettersson is of the same mindset.

Everything reported is the Pettersson wanted a short term deal. I think bridge deals for star players will be the norm now.

I think it’s stupid of a player to lock in before they’ve hit their peak. Players are understandably going to want to sign their big contracts when they are 24-26 years old.

I'm of a differing opinion. I feel if you lock in early you are set up in your late 20's to cash in on the Tvares type of contract where you get paid another 7 years for what you did in your peak. Getting paid in your peak means you aren't as likely able to milk your later years. Also it covers you in the event you sustain a major injury that alters your career trajectory. If Petterson still hasn't played a full season when this contract expires it's probably going to cost him money.

The shift has started though, and less and less money will end up with older players. The types of contracts you’re describing are almost always a mistake.

A mistake for the player? Not a star level contract, and not full 8 years, but the prepay on a reasonably long term for Rasmus worked out very well for the player

He is ONE covid/bubble year into the deal and you are declaring it as a win for the player because he is getting more than his value?

Amazing stuff.

He was no good last year, im not debating that, but his salary looks like it will be a bargain if he even gets back to the previous years level.

Why is it “amazing stuff”?

He was paid early and so far underperformed his pay. That’s a win for the player so far.

Don’t make it anything bigger than that. I’m not claiming it won’t change over time. That would be daft.

So far, it has worked out well for the player.

The Eichel situation is something that looms large right now. There's no denying the Canucks have tread water in a bad spot for a while. Pettersson wants to win, so why lock in for 8 years of losing and possibly getting jerked around when you get sick of it.

Lock in for 3, see where you are at the end of it both as a player and as a team.

The Coleman (not to mention Markstrom the year before) and Hyman contracts that take non-elite players into their mid-30's kind of contradict that.

They do? I think it’s almost a certainty that the Oilers regret that Hyman signing. Yet another over paid, post apex, future buyout, contract.

If Tkachuk gets offer sheeted next season, this may offer the best scenario.

The negotiation is done, and if overpay, let him go, and you get compensation (likely 2x1st, 2nd and 3rd—due for any contract $8.23MM to $10.27MM), if not an overpay, thanks for the contract.

Right now, the worry is the acceptance just of the qualifying offer, with no extra years or extension; a hefty contract that may be hard to deal for any real value…and then he walks for nothing.

Okay, Mangiapane then. My point is you don't want to hand out an offer sheet that's very likely to be matched because it gains you nothing - you're in the exact same spot you were in - except that now you're a target for a future offer sheet that could screw up your cap situation or result in you losing a player you'd rather keep. There's basically no upside and potentially some really annoying downside.

Markstrom had a bad season...he was elite when he signed the deal. Ask NHL GMs who rated him one of the best goalies in the game.

You can ask team Sweden too
