After going to university in Edmonton in the 00s/early 10s, it's much worse there. Oilers Oilers Oilers Oilers Oilers, even in the dead of summer. It's ridiculous. The Fan 960 felt MUCH more multi-sport in comparison after moving back to Calgary.

…I don’t hate Francis the way most do. It’s good to have opposing views, even if it’s just for the sake of opposition. Francis is like the Anti-Wills.
There must be balance.

I don't mind contrarians, he's just not that educated on hockey. That's probably the most annoying part. He doesn't even actually know what he's talking about.
He didn't even know Zadorov played top 4 the other day. That's your job dude, look the guy up.

I talked to a contact at the station this afternoon, and they knew even less than us. They were not told anything and were basically getting their info second hand from clients.

I like Marek, but he's Toronto biased I think. Pinder could go golf and drink forever. He's annoying.

I’d rather hear about another candy bracket than any of those.

Oh god, the junk food brackets they had were the worst radio I ever listened to. I felt 2nd hand embarrassment for them.

I find Boomer to be a great interviewer who can put the person he's interviewing at ease. Not sure if it's the tone of his voice or demeaner, but it feels like two friends talking whenever he's interviewing someone. He's definitely Fan960's best talent IMO, with Pinder being second. Steinberg I still like, because the guy works so hard, is a wealth of knowledge, and he comes across as a genuine guy, but he doesn't have the radio personality naturalness (if that's a word lol) that Boomer and Pinder have IMO.

The sports world was literally shut down. Not a single game of any sort was being played in the entire world.
Tell me what you would do to fill 4 hours every day with talk?
I did this gig many years ago and i dont think people appreciate how difficult it is to stay relevant every minute of every hour talking about one subject and keep people tuned in.
Its why good radio talent is so hard to find.
Boomer is such a guy, as is Pinder.

Rome is actually talking about the situation in Canada with him being back on air "forever how long". I'm surprised this news would get to him seeing the dealings would be with CBS.

That 2nd hand embarrassment line is actually a great way to sum up how I feel listening to the Jim Rome show (which I otherwise like) when they do the call-in smackoff shows with the "clones".
Them clearly reading burns off a script they worked on for hours while trying to mimic Rome's cadence is so cringe...I can actually feel myself wincing in the car when I hear it. I always have to flip the channel when that starts, my 2nd hand embarrassment for the callers is too much.

He actually mentioned this yesterday as well....which somehow lead him to talking how he lives in the same neighborhood as Chris Pronger and how his kid played on a team with Pronger and Scott Niedermayers sons.
Shows how engaged he is with his show from top to bottom though...dude is a brand and he is fully in control of it. There is a reason he is, by far, the highest paid sports broadcaster in the States.

That bracket talk was the only thing that saved anything worth listening to at the time. It actually got some pretty good discussions going on here too. It really helped when there was zero sports to talk about and people needed a light hearted distraction. I loved everything about those brackets.

Rome knows which of his affiliates are 3-hour, 2-hour and which ones run on delay.
Great that he’s back - I’m sick of tracking his stuff via podcast.
The man gets A-list guests - his Super Bowl week shows alone justify the rest of the year.
He talks intelligently about sports other than hockey.
Unlike some of the other major American hosts, he actually talks about baseball.
He remembers not to take himself too seriously - you’ll never hear him talk about DVOA or any analytics #### because that’s terrible radio.
Guest hosts that are/actually become names of their own - the Sklars, Jay Mohr, Skip Bayless, Rich Eisen, John Feinstein, Andrew Siciliano - Rome has a coaching tree that would rival Andy Reid.
I can live with 2 hours instead of three - Baseball/Hockey Central is at least a national broadcast with talent that didn’t drive to work in a Kia.
Two people from Vancouver who could be anyone and who suck at telling stories are not acceptable.
I’ve listened to this station daily for 17 years. Between 10-1, I would rarely if ever listen to my own music. I listen probably 95% less than I used to, and a lack of Rome is no small part of that.
Tell me I’m wrong, but I can’t listen exclusively to graduates of SAIT broadcasting.

I stream through my phone at the home or work office and I used to switch to HC@noon on 590 at 10am so I am happy about this 2 hour Marek show that will be on.
I liked some of Jim Rome’s stuff in small doses but can’t listen to his entire show everyday. Sometimes he gets a bit and it is hilarious and awesome and other times it is brutal and played out immediately yet he continues it which makes that specific show unlistenable.

He really does try to prop up the NHL but in a lot of US markets it's just not relevant. Kind of like the local 960 guys spending a lot of time on the NBA.

I totally agree. I listened to this years when I was driving and it was BRUTAL. "Yo mama so fat..."
