No, I don’t actually prefer option 3. I actually prefer 1 or 2 to 3. Definitely let them play on the road, it’s good for the fans and the game, as long as the team shows up
Tickets should still be sold by the team to fans for some actual dollars, for whoever wants to buy them. It’s just how I personally valued them and how we accounted for them and distributed cost. I couldn’t be bothered trying to put a relative value on them

Regardless of that game, still think Pelletier will be a gem.

My issue is that as a season ticket holder the Flames charge regular season prices.
I would suggest:
1) Charge pre season prices for pre season games.
2) Play the pre season in third party cities that don't have NHL.
3) Not charge for the pre sesaon and give the tickets away for free, recouping the cost during the regular season and playoffs.
4) Make it optional to get pre season tickets, like they do with playoff tickets. .
Fire away.

For me, I divided my annual total by 41, and pre season games were free

Sure, until you try to sell tickets and the price is based off 45 games

I'm not sure what other teams do.
However it was my understanding in some markets the pre season was optional at one time. I know a couple years ago if memory serves one of the Southern US teams played most of the exhibition out of town.
Maybe the Canadian teams should have a barnstorm tour of small towns in "Hockey Mad" Ontario for the exhibition games.

I agree with Deluxe Moustache, I just divide my invoice by 41 and that is how I determine my cost per ticket.
Preseason I mostly give away for free, hell sometimes I’m giving reg season games away for free cause it’s painful to try and sell certain games (early in the week game vs boring opponents)..

Always fun to see people freaking out about pre-season game #1 of 8.
The Flames dressed a bunch of older players - of course they were going to look bad against kids, because the kids actually GAF.
What was disappointing last night was Phillips, Gawdin, and guys like that.
Anyone who expected much from Lucic, Backlund, Lewis, Richardson, Pitlick, Andersson, etc, was setting themselves up for disappointment.
Every year, the young guys outplay the vets in the first few pre-season games, and every year, fans seem surprised and freak out about it.

I think most people are already freaked out because the team has been basically ass for 2.5 years now and really doesn't looked improved on paper from last year where they missed the playoffs.
While getting stomped in a pre-season game shouldn't be reason to 'freak out' by itself, it's probably more that it's just fuel getting dumped on an already burning dumpster fire.

I don't think it's that the fans are surprised by kids winning. People are tired of players playing like they don't GAF. Derek Ryan sure looked good last night, he's not exactly a kid.
I think people are disappointed that Dube/Andersson/Valimaki looked the same like they did last season. Many fans were cautiously optimistic about them taking a step this year. While it is more than possible, we as fans get carried away expecting immediate results.
People are also disappointed in the Gudbranson signing and the game confirmed the expectations the fans had from the signing. Again, he could still work out here, but he didn't do himself any favors.
Finally, the Flames also iced a bunch of kids. Those kids were supposed to show you something, anything. I had very high hopes for Mackey and Pelltier for this season, I still do, but that game was very lackluster for everyone except the goalies.

On paper, the Flames iced a superior team. I think it's reasonable to expect them to, at the very least, not get walked all over. They were basically pantsed in front of the class.
With a few exceptions, they looked completely unprepared, disoriented, and passive. The Oilers on the other hand, did not.
I understand that preseason is not the best measuring stick, but it is still a way of seeing how the team initially comes together. The good news is that the results don't count and there is still time to work out the kinks, so I won't get too low over it. The coaches have a lot of work to do at this point though.

Well, if your cost is, say 65 a ticket, then you eat 5 bucks. If that hurts, maybe the ticket holder should think if he is stretching himself thin
Selling wasn’t my primary motivation for having the tickets
But I do travel for work and the nuisance of managing tickets when I couldn’t make it was a key factor why I gave them up after many seasons

First games as a Flames for Gudbrandson, Zaradov, Lewis, Pitlick, Vladr and Richardson.
No need to worry about looking good, check our highlight reels. We get paid the same whether we play well or not. Maybe next year we catch on with someone else.

I know it's your 'thing' to be as negative as you can about the Flames, but it was preseason Game #1. Yes, they looked bad and that makes you giddy but maybe dial it back a bit.

Yeah you can almost see the drool on his keyboard!
I'm not high on this core, I'm not all that high on the Flames. I think they'll be better this year, and probably get a playoff spot, but I don't like the way they look long term.
But one preseason game doesn't add any additional dread to what I'm feeling.

Do you think the game was a bigger deal to the Flames roster or the Oilers roster though
happens every pre-season and not even just with the Flames.
Game one of the preseason is the biggest game ever for certain guys, and a chore for an NHL vet

Pitlick got injured and didn't play, Vladr was great
Flames have the road roster tonight so if they play well are they awesome or do you need to take preseason with a grain of salt?

James Neal lit it up in his first preseason game this year. Obviously it's going to be a big year for him.

IMO It's only a matter of time before pre season games are totally eliminated in the NHL. There is talk NFL will go to 18 games and no pre season games.
For contact sports, it only makes sense. When boxers spar, they wear headgear that you don't wear in actual fights.
Just have camp and scrimmages. The season is plenty long enough that some games feel like exhibition games anyway.
