Have the Flames adopted some kind of NFL model where head coach largely calls the shots on personnel?

Anyway too early to panic on any one player.

He probably didn't tell him anything because Backlund is a 15-year NHL veteran who knows what he is doing. This isn't his first training camp. Hell, this is not even his first training camp under Darryl Sutter.

Lewis Richardson and Lucic have been the only good line tonight.

Mackey is looking good too

Perlini's fighting for a spot.

I wouldn't take anything from this game - Edmonton dressed a bubble roster and they're playing as if their careers depend on it.

Vladar looked pretty good.

I would rather the Flames win than lose too but history show us pre-season isn't very relevant when it comes to the regular season

Was going to say Mackey has been easily the better of the "Makis" tonight.

If your goal is to win, why not work on winning habits from day one.

Saving that for game 20, or whatever is what non-winning players and groups do.

^ This is why I'm irked with even early performances like this from key players.
Blake Coleman, who just won 2 stanley cups said a good team knows when to step on the gas and when to let up and save energy.

It is Backlund’s first camp under Darryl. Darryl stopped coaching after 05/06, and then drafted Backlund in 07.

You think Darryl didn’t say anything to one of his two Alternate captains dressed for tonight?

The Flames need to get the crowd back into this. The players on the bench should lead a rendition of the "Bird Dance" at the next break.

I haven't been that impressed with dube in a while. But people seem to think he's going to take a 'step' or whatever. I dunno..

If you're trying to impress your coach you don't let up.

People keep bringing up Tampa Bay's preseason record, but they just won the Stanley Cup... I'd bet they had Stanley Cup hangover and certainly didn't have a ton of roster spots open.

Calgary is in the opposite position that Tampa was in. Tons of questions and, possibly, some open roster spots to fill.

I haven't bothered to get too worked up about a preseason game, but citing Tampa Bay's performance as a corollary is certainly a reach

It’s an exhibition game and means very little.

But it’s hard not to be disappointed at the complete lack of effort for the first home game in a long time, especially against Edmonton.

It's not about results in PS, but it's about the players you hope to win with getting their habits and effort level up to standard early in preparation for the season.

Again, how does one just flip a switch game 1 if you haven't been practicing the right things?

Gawdin, Ruzicka, Phillips, Rittchie have done very little well tonight. Especially because of where they are in the depth chart.

Popisil could easily be included if it weren't for the finished checks.

Pelletier has been o.k but has not stood out.

This crowd in regular season is a tick above the quiet library in Minneapolis. Snooze...

Maybe? If he said anything it was probably not the Gipper speech.

The last Stanley cup winner to have a winning pre season record was in 1967.

Yeah it’s been such a bad game it’s hard to get a read on anyone outside of those who have made giant errors (…Gudbranson). The team can’t break out of their own zone - and that’s the main point of concern for me because this game has 4 of our 6 main defenders, and they can’t make a breakout pass to save their life.
