^ Maybe winning a championship isn’t the biggest thing for Gaudreau.

Then why would we extend him at a premium?

In my eyes if this team is serious about winning a championship in this “era” with Darryl behind the bench then the team needs to:
- Acquire Jack Eichel
- Extend Johnny Gaudreau
- Extend Matthew Tkachuk
It’s okay to pay a premium for all three of those players, because they’re worth it. Spend on the top parts of your roster and challenge your pro scouts and GM to fill out the rest of the roster with bargains. Overpaying depth players is a path to nowhere.

I like it, but I think the team would need johnny to sign for less than 9 per

It’s going to cost a premium to keep Johnny Gaudreau as a Flame.
He won’t sign for 8x8. It would be done already if that was an outcome he viewed as acceptable.
As a UFA, Gaudreau gets minimum $9.5M, and probably $10+ in all likelihood. Doesn’t matter if it’s not in the Tristate area. Someone will pay him.
So again, what reason does he have to sign with us?
Getting to play with Eichel for another 4 years minimum would be a reason.
To me, anyway.

Well to me premium means pay him more than he would get on the open market. And the open market is where he will be soon enough. So no, I would not do that.
Now I have no idea if winning a Stanley Cup is what drives Gaudreau and is the biggest factor for where he’ll sign. I’m sure he wants to win but I truly don’t know how important it is to him. He may like playing in Calgary for other reasons.

I think it is entirely plausible that Gaudreau believes this group can win. In fact, I suspect that most players—except for those playing on rebuilding teams like in Ottawa, Arizona or Buffalo—share this same mindset about their own teams.

You can't do all of those together. One of them has to go. Pick one of the three. Tkachuk is the odd man out IMO. Trade him while you can. He's not worth the investment IMO.

Getting 8 years instead of 7 is a reason.
Gaudreau is on record talking about getting screwed on his last contract so I don't believe there will be any home town discount, but its not outside the realm of possibility that he would re-sign if the money is right.

Only time Gaudreau has said "kinda screwed me" was when he was talking about burning the first year of his ELC playing last game of year and how he had no arbitration rights or rights at all when it was time for a contract.

So in this last page I have learned posters on CP know he will hit the open market and what the player will sign for and what he won't. Lots of insiders on here.

Assuming it’s dollar in dollar out (meaning Lucic + Backlund or Monahan + a bunch of picks/prospects), then we could keep all three. It would likely just mean we wouldn’t be able to go longer than 2-3 years on Mang’s next deal.

If Eichel is coming one of Backlund or Mony are gone imo. Assuming 9m for Chuck and gaudreau 28 m on 3 forwards is pretty steep but doable if u can move out a couple contracts. Lindholm is still a bargain and muchbof our d is 1 year contracts.

8x$9.5 vs 7x$10 is only a difference of $6M, and it’s far, far less than that in terms of real money - especially stacked up against the value of a $70M contract.
Do you think Johnny wouldn’t get $10M as a UFA?
Please, don’t anyone think I don’t believe it’s possible Johnny will extend here.
I think they need to give him a reason to do it. He probably would, if he knew Eichel was going to be his centre in three months.

I don't see Gaudreau getting $10M as a UFA. I just don't see a team where it would make sense. How much did Hall sign for, $8M? This year he signed for $6M x 4, but he definitely took a discount to stay in Boston. I thought he was a pretty good comparison, though at a cash strapped year. This year Landeskog's $7M x 8, and Couturier's $7.75M x 8 are the closest comparables... If John can get $10M then best of luck to him elsewhere.

He will get 8 years from any of the 5 teams on his trade list.

I have a hard time seeing it myself. The ability to play wherever you want, start your new family wherever you want, go to a better team, a better city, better weather, potentially more money or a better tax situation, etc. I suppose being comfortable could outweigh all of that since who really knows what Johnny values, but it's hard to imagine. With the way the team has been trending, half of the current roster could be gone in the near future anyways so it seems hard to imagine that's what would be drawing him to the Flames long term.
