People in this thread complaining about increasing contracts amounts for RFAs.
I think it's good that players are getting paid for their value and skill level, regardless of number of years in the league. Pay your star players what they are worth.

This is undoubtably a good thing for fans who are tired of overpaid seniors on the team.

Say they don’t.

The Athletic has an interesting article on how Kaprizov's agent had him secretly travel to the U.S. and get vaccinated.
Quote:
Guerin immediately headed to the airport for a flight to South Florida. A few days earlier, Guerin learned that Kaprizov had secretly flown to Miami, where he would quarantine, receive an NHL-authorized COVID-19 vaccine and wait until his contract was finalized so he hopefully would not miss training camp
|
Quote:
“I give Kirill and his agent a lot of credit for planning ahead and planning for the future and getting here with ample time to quarantine and get vaccinated and do all the things that would’ve really taken weeks. When I found out, I was thrilled.
|
Pretty smart.

Johnny can point Treliving to this contract and start from there

Yup. And Tkachuk can hit Treliving over it to justify his qualifying offer as the starting point for negotiations.

Well, 9 is the starting point already because of the QO
If Kaprizov does better than Tkachuk again, Tre could reference it as an end point

Does anyone really still think Tkachuk will be negotiating with the flames on good faith? His intentions are so obvious at this point.

Wait Travis didn't wanna play in playoffs and quit on his team and wasn't first in line to be vaccinated? What a weird dude.

if Johnny continues to be a point per game player and Chucky is a 30 goal physical player that he can be then $9M x 5 for each is fine by me.

He's .85 over the last couple years. The biggest question is if he's the JG of three years ago (and arguably the last month of last year) or not. And his PO performance is an issue as well.
Chucky - 30 goals and physical gets you $4M more than Tom Wilson? In any event, he's only hit 30 goals once. His comparable is arguably Landeskog. You could make an argument for using Gallagher or Kreider. Maybe Kyle Connor.

I rounded up for both of them and yes I'd prefer lower cap hits for both but my point was that if they continue to produce at a decent level then those cap hits SHOULDN'T handcuff the team to much going forward.

I'm not calling him that but the two aren't mutually exclusive. You can be smart and read up on the COVID/quarantine protocols and still be capable of driving a hard bargain and using sharp tactics in negotiations. It probably helps.

And neither makes him selfish nor a prick. Point being he made private arrangements to be ready for day 1 of training camp

Agreed. What it makes him is a responsible pro hockey player. It also shows he was assuming a deal could be done, or at least, not betting against it.

5 years? Why would they take 5 years?
If Calgary could get each for that contract, Trev is spectacular.
