No, not at all like that… I wish our playoff record was even close to theirs.

Losing in the first round every year, then the second before exploding for a cup. Revisionist history if you think they were good in the playoffs for the first 10 years Ovechkin played.
Next up is Colorado being a cup favourite when they get smoked in the second round again.

Actually, they went to second round 5 times in the last ten years, not including their cup win in 2018… sooo yeah.

So what? They were a legit contender for over a decade and it was still hard for them to win a cup. Just imagine the likelihood of a wannabe team like the Flames winning a cup if it's that hard for an elite perennial contender to do it sometimes.

Isn't that what the Blues did?

The team that had 99 points despite being in last place on new years?
Hardly a wannabe team either. They had a long period of contender status and 100+ point seasons before they finally broke through.

They were a tough team to play under Hitchcock, but they had quite a few first round losses (which are frowned upon here). And the year before they weren’t good.
I’d say LA in their first cup. A team that had missed or been bounced in round one every year since 1993 wins the whole thing in 2012. A couple good regular seasons but mostly terribad teams as well.

What exactly are we debating here?
That it's a good plan to be a mediocre team and hope you have a hot playoff run?
Its a terrible idea to do that. Unfortunately it's all the Flames can hope for at this point before they inevitably have to tear it to the ground and rebuild again.
They should have tore it down after the Dallas playoff loss, but they're stubborn and obviously cling to the faint hope that they will be the next LA Kings...except without a prime Koptiar, Doughty or Quick lol
Good luck with that.

That the goal at the start of the season is to make the playoffs.
Because...it is.
Then see what happens.
You say the goal is to win the Stanley Cup, which is trueas well for every team, but heres the catch....cant win it all, if you dont get in first.
Pretty simple concept really.

I am not debating anything. I wanted a tear down last season. It’s obvious that ain’t gonna happen and therefore this is the next best hope. It’s that or just enjoying whining all the time.

Yes, obviously.
But that's the problem, the Flames don't build an sustainable cup contender. They build a team that might make the playoffs and then get lucky. No wonder they never have any success.

I'm not whining. I stated the obvious.
Treliving says the goal is to make the playoffs and see what happens.
Lofty expectations indeed.
So I pointed out the obvious, that this team is always aiming low and hoping for the best, so no wonder no sustainable success is ever realized.
The only reason I keep going with it is because people keep responding to my posts.
I didn't think my first post was unreasonable at all, but then a poster came along and thought I needed it explained to me that in order to win the cup you need to make the playoffs first.
Well yeah, no #### Sherlock lol

In my mind the goal should be to build an organization with a deep pool of talent that consistently competes at a high level. Making the playoffs should be the baseline expectation as half the teams in the NHL make it. Being in the top 50% of the NHL should not be an organizational high bar. I want to cheer for a team that wants to win and win a lot.

You really think the team, any team outside of a team that’s rebuilding for that matter, is aiming low?

If Treliving said “we expect to win the cup” we’d just all laugh.

Only when your rebuild has failed but you are too stubborn to start over again and cling to the faint hope that you can get hot at the right time.
A team should have one of two goals.
1. Build a legit Stanley cup contender
2. Win a Stanley cup
Flames are always caught in the middle it seems.
They're trying to win a cup without a legit cup contending team. So then the mantra becomes "let's make the playoffs and see what happens" lol
Heh, maybe it works this time.

Isn’t that still aiming for the cup? How is that aiming low?
If they’re trying to win a cup without a “legit” cup contending team, they’re among probably 20 other teams trying to do the same.
I just think it’s exceptionally pointless to hold the expectation that you better be Pittsburgh in their prime or you better be burning it to the foundation like Arizona. Plenty of teams go from “one of the 20” to Stanley Cup winner. Plenty of “legit” contenders never win and rebuilds never rise above one of the 20.
They’re all aiming for the cup though.

Lol that's the biggest problem with this franchise!
They're always aiming for the cup without a cup contender. Going on 30+ years now. That's my whole point.
It is what it is now though. They've got the team they've got and they aren't blowing it up. All we can do is hope for the best until they're forced to start over again. Hopefully next time they do it right and get some luck too, because it takes a bit of everything to build a legit contending team, and even then it's no guarantee, it just improves your odds
