Not a defense of BT but finishing first in the Western Conference regular season is a positive result. It was a fun year up until the playoffs .

If that's the case they should've been dealt this summer or last season.
Gaudreau had a good year, still has value and Tkachuk has very high value, and the season does nothing to change that.
So the talk about dwindling value or whatever holding back trades must've been in regards to Monahan.
I'm willing to bet one is in on board to sign long term, but won't take any kind of discount. It's hard to say who. But I don't see both 100% intent on going elsewhere.

Just the most Flames way to finish 1st in the conference. Do something great as a team then immediately drain all the joy away from that accomplishment with a first round stinker.
I'd rather finish 8th and go three rounds.

I totally agree. We should be rebuilding and taking advantage of maximizing returns by doing it sooner rather than later. Not to mention trying to take advantage of the 2022 and 2023 drafts.
Eventually, rebuilding won't be a choice anymore and teams that are forced into tend to struggle more through the process because of the reasons you mentioned. People talk as if rebuilding is always a choice, but quite often it isn't. It just happens because players want to move on.

People are sick of cliches and hope against all evidence that the team is a little more aspirational.

Funny how people hoping for things that arent in the works can be annoying to read again and again.

Exactly!! He's referred to this.. what? 5-6 times and has nothing to show for it. It is a perpetual cliche with very little to no validity.

The Flames made it past the first round twice since 1989. One of them was under BT's tenure. Is this just a GM issue? The Flames haven't been relevant since 94.

They are not messing around segregating the groups.

I like it. Group 1 is there for the experience, and Group 3 has to excel against a real NHL calibre squad if they want to make the team. No kid's gloves.

Yup no messing with groups. This is the team. Start getting some chemistry and earning your role from day 1.
Only thing I would have liked was 2 of Ruzicka, Pospisil, Phillips, or Gawdin in Group 2. And Mackey should be in group 2 for sure.
At least have a couple of young guys in there to put some pressure on the vets.

Nope not just a BT issue, but the fact is he hasn't engineered anything resembling success. Failure in the past shouldn't excuse current Failure

I strongly dislike the approach they are taking with Mackey and I suspect he feels the same way. It can't exactly be a ringing endorsement for this organization in regards to attracting future highly coveted free agents out of college.
He immediately stepped in and was Stockton's top player last season who then acquitted himself nicely into the NHL lineup at the end of the season. He went on to have a strong showing internationally as well. He's 25 years old, not some 19/20 year old kid.
He then get's leapfrogged by two borderline NHL vets extremely late in the off-season and subsequently put on the B roster to start training camp.
I know I am likely reading to much into it, but I am sure he can't be happy.

As players get closer to UFA, their value decreases. Especially if they get traded to a team that sees them as a difficult sign. That doesn't mean they still don't have decent value, but it is decreasing.

Agreed. A team can just wait until they reach UFA and give up no assets to sign them.
Though it has been said often in other threads, it is likely the organizational mandate is to try to put forward the best team now to compete. Where this mandate comes from is unknown but Treliving is the person saying it at press conferences.
Unless a trade makes the team better to compete now or the near future - even if the GM liked it from an asset management view - it may have been a difficult sell in this organization. This assumes the organization is telling him to compete now. If Treliving is the source of the mandate, then it is unlikely he seriously looks at a futures trade for Johnny or Matthew this summer.
With the movement this summer, I doubt there were many hockey trades available for either Johnny or Matthew that didn't leave the team in a worse position to compete today. I think that those two players in contract years will probably play very well (hopefully) and make a difficult summer for the Flames.
Honestly, if the team crashes like so many are predicting then the path forward is clear and you burn it down. I have my doubts that this team is bad enough to be selling at the trade deadline.

Like the terrible playoffs of Washington Capitals, except for the one year they won a cup.
