I just saw an advance screening of 300, thanks to the recently departed Red Mile Style and I was amazed as to how f'n cool that movie was. Unlike anything I have ever seen and it met and exceeded my expectations and that's saying a lot because I was super pumped about it.
This movie is gonna have a huge hardcore fan base, the theatre I was in was full of drunk university students but they were loving every minute of it as much as the sober people. During many scenes, people were hooting and hollering and clapping. When it was all said and done, a huge ovation. I can't wait till next week when I am gonna see it on a IMAX screen.

Pretty mixed reviews, but Rotten Tomatoes still has it listed as fresh.
Looking at the reviews, it looks like the type of a movie crowds will love but critics won't.
Anyone seeing it tonight?

If you plan to go, call around first. A few theaters are already sold out completely (all shows).

9:45 at the imax tonight!
most of the reviews I've seen have bashed it, but based upon the whole "people who like gladiator will like this movie, but where is the character development?"
Basically it's an action movie.

I don;t know what you guys are reading, but I have read quite a few good reviews about it. It says leave your brain at the door and enjoy the ride. Exactly what I thought when I saw it.

Why should I have to leave my brain at the door to enjoy a movie? If I should have to do that then that indicates it's a crappy f'in movie.

Just saw the movie last night. Best movie I have seen in a very long time.
Frank Miller is a damn god in the graphic novel world. It's amazing how his works have translated to film. 300 just follows the typical "epic movie" format and doesn't offer up much that we havn't already seen for a typical hero movie. Rather, 300 offers quite possibly the most visually stunning movie realeased to date.
It's not going to win oscars (well, maybe visual effects), but I certainly feel like I got more entertainment for the ticket price then you typically get. Trust me, this flick will have you standing on your chair screaming SPARTA!!! by the end.

It's a poor way of saying, "don't expect to learn anything important or be forced to think in a new way".
I actually think 300 offers quite a bit to think about. How bout the struggle of reason versus a "god-king". Age old story, eerilly applicable to modern times.

Saw the movie last night. Great flick, throughly enjoyed it. The first half of the movie is basically setting up for the last half, which is the battle. Amazing visual effects and action. If the previews interested you, then I recommend this movie.

Saw it yesterday afternoon, brilliant visually and style wise, battle scenes were as original as could be given the dearth of epic movies lately. The start of the film was excellent setting up spartan life, and Gerard Butler as the king was excellent.

It didn't really do it for me. It was really nice to look at; the skies, the oceans, the mountains, and the persian warriors were all stunning but as far as the story goes, it wasn't anything I haven't seen before. I didn't feel anywhere near the compassion for the Spartans as I did for Mel Gibson's men in Braveheart.
The Spartans also made it look too easy. It seemed like they were dominating a war in which they were ridiculously outnumbered. I didn't feel that "cheer for the underdog" feeling that you get when the hero faces extreme adversity.
I did like the Queen's story and its' resolve; I thought her character was the most refreshing in the movie. I also would have like to seen more of Xerxes too as he was more interesting than King Leonidas.

That sums it up to a tee. Saw it last night on an IMAX screen. Visually its incredible. You're definitely entertained for the film's entirety. But I think the movie was more so-so. From an action standpoint its amazing, and as I mentioned before, visually as well. But I thought the acting was really cheesy. For those who saw it, let's face it, there were some BAD lines in that movie. Gladiator's dialogue was much better than that.
I love war movies and love motivational speeches and the like in them, but some of the lines in 300 are just corny. I mean its supposed to be ancient Greek times, and theyre talking like its present day!("Is that all you got??" "Its gonna be one hell of a night" "Bring it on!!"). I definitely rolled my eyes a few times in that movie over some of those lines. The movie did not make me want to stand up and cheer for the Spartans, as some reviews suggest.
And I just couldnt get into it because, as someone else mentioned, the Spartans made it seem too easy. At one point theyre being bombarded with arrows and theyre laughing arrogantly. And 300 men destroying thousands and thousands of top Persian soldiers, while suffering almost zero casualties throughout most of the movie is just not realistic. I didnt get into it like I would most war movies.
All in all, great movie to see for its stunning visual performance. This is a definite must see in the theatres. But most of the "inspirational" lines did not inspire me, and there is absolutely no character development(whatever happened with the hunchback in the end?? He just turns on them, and then...nothing?? Was he double crossed in the end by the God King, or were his wishes granted? Did he get his commupance from the Greeks for what he did? Did he have a change of heart? Felt unfinished). I'd give it a 6 out of 10, but due to the amazing visual display, Ill bump it up to a 7.
btw was I the only person that thought the Persian God-King looked EXACTLY like Dahlsim from Street Fighter?

Again you realize this did actually happen?
I thought the movie was great, though it did have cheesy lines here and there. But do you really want to see them speaking like they did in Ancient Greek times. I know I sure don’t.

Yeah I know what you're sayin, I dont wanna see stuff like that of course. But Id like to hear smarter, more cultured lines than what you'd hear in a modern day boxing movie. "Is that all you got??"...weak

i don't see how you can say it's not realistic when that's exactly what happened in the real battle of thermopylae
