If Tkachuk wants a big ol market value contract? Well, I think the Flames ought to give it to him because I think he's a player you can win with. I think he should be our next Captain. I think Tkachuk is worth somewhere between $9.5 and $10.5M AAV on a longer term contract (6 years?). I'd love to see a 6 year deal worth $9.5M'ish. That would take him to 30 years old which is perfect timing for him to head off and sign a long term big dollar deal with some other team (or here, if he happens to have the legs).
When you've got Seth Jones and Darnell Nurse making $9.5M, the market for top players has changed. Treliving should have paid more to get more years out of Tkachuk rather than the idiotically structured bridge deal in the first place though...

Worries me quite a bit, because his AAV at his qualifying offer is too rich for my blood. Huge term with that? I’m out. I like the player, but to me isn’t your ‘guy’ up front despite being paid like he is.

I would much rather pay $9-10 million for one Tkachuk than for two overpaid late 20s/early 30s UFAs.

So this all but confirms that daddy Tkachuk who was hard to negotiate with is telling his kids to do the same. Ugh not good for flames if they want to sign him or trade him . Can’t see a team like Buffalo being even remotely interested in having to go through negotiations next summer with the Tkachuks after what they have been through this summer .

I don’t think you can understate how brutal that interview is to hear for a flames fan
That 9mil QO was a massive mistake

Tkachuk has played 5 full seasons as a Flame and we have won sfa. He hasn't proven he can step up in the playoffs. I agree he is a top line player but he hasn't proven that he's a leader and needs a lot of maturing before he's captain material. $9 X 8 might end up being a good deal but there's definitely risk in that amount.
Edit. After actually reading the interview, yikes. My maturity comment above is letting him off easy. Definitely not something you'd want to hear if he was our captain. Sounds pretty 'me first'. As I've said here before, if you cam only get him for next year with the 1 year contract, ship him out.

The ‘pulling a classic Tkachuk’ comment is troubling. I wouldn’t be terribly happy to read that if I’m the Flames either. It’s this type of stuff that shows his immaturity, IMO.

I think troubling is being generous
He talks about being difficult in negotiations as a point of pride, and Brad gave him ALL the leverage in the upcoming one

I wouldn't! I'd rather have a Coleman + Toffoli/Hoffman instead of Tkachuk + Ritchie/Lewis, but that's me. I'd even rather have the capspace than over pay for Tkachuk, not after last season. If Tkachuk is a PPG LW this season, then maybe he is worth it. Tkachuk didn't take over nearly enough games to justify such a contract. Especially if(and that's a big if) the dip in play truly came from him quitting on the team after the puck incident... then he can do it again especially if he knows he has all the leverage with his contract.

Gross. I'd really love if the Flames just washed their hands of the Tkachuks all together right now.
I'll say this though, Matty better put up some big boy numbers this year or shut up at the negotiating table.

I don't think it's that big of a deal what he said. He understandably is in his brother's corner and is going to say everything to help put pressure on. When it comes to us, he wants to get paid fairly as said previously. Fine by me. As long as he delivers on that contract and is willing to take the booing/fan vitriol if he falls short. I would prefer 3-4 year contracts for guys with a mercenary view like this personally. If they walk after, then so be it....cap space is an asset.

Tkachuk should never be the captain of the flames. Seems like a true dbag.
I'd be shocked if he's here for his next contract. For all the "getting good character guys who want to win" I just don't see how he fits that mold at all. He's good, not great player, who withers away just as much as any other forward on this team come playoff time.
You aren't an elite superstar in the league if a simple puck flipped in Ur direction leaves you moping and useless for the remainder of the season, well until the team is eliminated and he simply pads his stats.

Yea, not gonna lie, as an owner of multiple Tkachuk jerseys and his biggest fan, that was far from the best thing to read. Especially speaking so openly about it and coming off sounding so entitled and me-first.
No trouble paying him what he deserves, but his quotes kinda comes off as sounding like the entire Tkachuk clan (which we knew already from Keith's past) has no trouble holding out to be paid more than they deserve.
Hopefully he puts his money where his mouth is this season

He's sniffing his own farts (or ComixZone's) if he thinks he is even worth his QO unless he produces a massive season. There are different markets for forwards and D-men. The top of the relevant market is Kucherov and Point right now and guess what? Matthew isn't there. I also know that Sutter and Treliving know this, too.
I'm ready to see how this season plays out before passing judgment, but it's on him to earn it if he wants that payday.

If only our Tkachuk put as much effort into his skating as his contract negotiations.

not going to over react to this...he is pumping his brothers tires is all
Fact remains he should be an 80+ point guy if he wants to be paid like one...put up or shut up

9 million dollar players don't put up 60-some points.
Going to have to play over his average just to warrant his QO.
But I will say if Matt Tkachuk puts up 80+ this team is playoff bound and possibly a round plus deep (because he would have to be going well and PAC opponents would be sub par compared to first rounds in other divisions).
