Eight New CFL Rules + 1 Rule Change
http://www.tsn.ca/ctvnews/sportsstor...tory_id=199405
The kick return touchdown should make a comeback in the Canadian Football League this season with a rule change that will (0) bring back blocking from the side.
The board also approved new roughing penalties against (1) hitting players already on the ground, (2) making "horse collar" tackles by grabbing a player's shoulder pads and (3) hitting long snappers above the shoulders.
Quarterbacks will get extra protection from rules banning (4) hits below the knees and (5) leading with the helmet when hitting the passer.
Another rule bans (6) the "snap down" into a two or three-point stance by an offensive lineman to try to lure the defence offside.
Other new rules were aimed at eliminating deliberate fouls intended to (7) run down the clock and penalizing teams for (8) kicking the ball out of bounds.

Anyway, those changes look great to me. Kicking the ball out of bounds between the 20's is an interesting change that should make for interesting decisions by teams.

The CFL used my idea for the kicking game!! I want credit for this! Other than that my proposed rule changes didn't include the 'inside the 20' exception, it's exactly what I've been proposing. The CFL should give me free tickets or something! I demand respect, damn it!!

I'm not opposed to protecting the QB. But I would say add a penalty for a QB when he pretends he's going to slide, but doesn't. Either that or treat them like a RB when they act like a RB.
Just waiting for the CFL page to open; I hope punts out of bounds doesn't end up being a penalty. I guess I'll find out in 15 minutes when cfl.ca opens.

between the 20 yard lines the team has the option to take a 10 yard penalty.
2. Rule 5, Section 4 – Kick from Scrimmage
Rule change – add as Article 3, and renumber articles that follow:
“Kick from Scrimmage Going Out of Bounds in Flight”
On a kick from scrimmage going out of bounds in flight between the 20-yard lines, the receiving team will have the option of taking possession at the point the ball went out of bounds in flight, or having a 10-yard penalty applied against the kicking team at the point of the last scrimmage, with the down repeated.
Rationale for change – Forces kicking team on punts and field goal attempts to land the ball in the field of play.

the cfl has its own rules and is different then nfl football so it doesnt effect all of football to "market" itself to a group of non-traditional football fans. the blocking rule essentially changed back to what it was two years ago, give them credit for fixing a bad rule and the rest of the rules dont ruin the game or anything. dont know if you watched any games last season but they werent quite as exciting as the year before(IMO) and give them credit for trying to tweak the game. go watch the nfl, oh wait...i believe the nfl changed its football, or *******ized its game in the 90s to make it more like the nfl. any good league is willing to make small changes and ignoring some traditionalists. remember both leagues used to play rugby, change is good

It's good for the CFL to institute new rules and all, but what's the point when you don't have any officials capable of calling them properly to begin with?

and yet you post in this thread..hrmm. sorry i just dont understand why people have a such a problem with the cfl. canadian football has been around since the 1800s(we introduced football to americans) so it can be that bad. yes the refs arent great but they get criticized in every league in the world at some point. if you say whats the point, nothing ever gets better.

What are you trying to suggest, that I try to do something about it?
LARF, the people in the league offices can't even find the answers.

^^ Spoken like somebody who does not understand the rule.
Sorry, just a pet peave of mine. In the CFL you do not get a point for missing a field goal. When you miss a field goal, the receiving team has the option of playing the ball, or conceeding the point in order to get certain field position. It adds an element to the game that is lacking in the NFL.
And as somebody who understands the CFL- I can see that many of the rule changes for this year were put in place to add some excitement to the kicking game. Take away the option to conceed the point, and you take all of that away.
Don't get me wrong; I now consider myself more of an NFL fan than CFL. But I can still appreciate the qualities of the game.

Somebody has obviously never heard of Devin Hester.
EDIT: Not to mention the NFL's regime is more strategy-based when you're deciding whether or not to kick the FG, knowing your opponent gets the ball on the spot if you miss.

i agree with ken, it does get annoying when people criticize something they dont understand fully.
lol well i know i havent(or if i did i didnt remember it) you cant argue that for the amount of games played, missed field goal returns happen alot more often in the cfl. anyways yes it is more about strategy in the nfl, they analyze everything to pieces, i wont argue against that. i care more about excitement then strategy and both games do involve a fair amount of strategy as they are both...football. just as the fact the team gets the ball where you miss from in the nfl affects strategy, the possibility of concieving a point or the risk of running out and not making it to the 30 affects strategy in the cfl

That's just my point. His FG return was so rare in the NFL that it made all of the highlight reels. Obviously in the NFL with the upright placement the ball will go out of play most of the time. In the CFL it will most often land in bounds. Add to that the fact that in the CFL you have field goal attempts closer to mid field, and you now have an issue of field position.
Then you add to all of that the players on the field for the FG attempt are generally not good tacklers. If you take away the ability to conceed the single point, then you take away that play 95% of the time.
And as Devin Hester showed us; that can be an exciting play to watch. What the CFL does is add that level of excitement to every second or third game. That FG attempt with 2 seconds left in the half that was supposed to put you up by 3 points ends up putting you down by 7- a 10 point swing.
You are correct in the the NFL is strategy based. However on this particular play; there is more strategy involved with the CFL.
