Monahan ... I've heard his surgery was successful, so I think it likely he's better than when he was injured.
Tkachuk and Gaudreau had already rebounded under Sutter, so they have to keep that up.
Markstrom is less likely to be injured under a Sutter system.

But then yeah ... I think the young defense taking a step is a huge issue, and one that may be the biggest issue for the team.

I think Mangiapane will be ok, still not sure what they have in Dube.

Huntingwale's if list was long, but if it all went the right way (highly unlikely), this team wouldn't be "all right", they'd be conference contenders.

I think we see an improvement and a solid playoff team, but not a contending team. And hopefully some playoff success with a team used to playing that style.
Markstrom, to me, is a must have in terms of positive “ifs”. This team need above average to elite goaltending to have a good year

What was the problems last year?

1) Ward—-fixed, easy
2) Underperformed top players——nothing was done to change the core, is Coleman enough?
Is Monahan healthy?
3) non existent secondary scoring- will young players get a chance? Unimpressive new acquisition
4) can’t defend to save their lives when they need it- is zadorov enough?
5) Mediocre goaltending- who is the real Markstrom?

I like Sutter the coach, but he had his problems with this core this year as well. To be technical, I think the jury is out on what he can do with the team (not his abilities, but moreso on the culture potentially being messed beyond repair). I certainly hope the offseason allows for everyone to start fresh, but we'll see.

I personally have little doubt Monahan will bounce back (and subsequently traded at the deadline).

Markstrom was amazing to start the season, then the injury derailed everything. If he's healthy, there ultimately is little doubt he will be back again.

To me, I'm very big on Dube. I think we have a poor mans Marc Savard with him (to fit into a Flames box). Still questions about how he rounds out and how the coaching staff works with him to develop. He looked great until last season, which everyone but Lucic faltered.

On paper this team is a playoff team. But given how things have been recently, and all the question marks, I think they're around the 8-10 in their conference. We'll see. I still see a ton of question marks where a lot of stars have to align.

The guy came in 3/4 of the way through a Covid locked down season which had very few practices to implement any changes to the system. His so called "problems" with the core I would say were carry overs from the slow practices and lame duck system Ward was using. I bet Darryl whips these guys into shape with a full season.

He actually came in before the halfway point of the season, not 3/4 of the way through

Otherwise, I agree that we should reasonably expect better play with the benefit of training camp and practice time

Sutter will be a good coach, IMO no doubt there.

I remain concerned this core has been through too much failure together to expect significant improvement. I just can’t understand why there hasn’t been some change to that mix even if it’s done in stages.

I agree that Sutter has his hands full with the core. I think that the little bump when he came in followed by a return to bad play was some evidence of that.

As for why it wasn’t changed, really there are only 3 candidates to move and they each have their challenges in a trade. Tkachuk has his $9M QO and reported desire to go to SL. Gaudreau has his MNTC and his essentially one year rental status before UFA. Monahan has his last year stats and his health. I suspect the returns for all of these guys would have been pretty disappointing.

The rest of the core - Lindholm I am not moving. Backlund is entrenched. Tanev is valuable. Markstrom still needs evaluation, plus he and Tanev just got here. Hanifin took huge steps and I’d move him only if the return was overwhelming.

Was about to nitpick your points but I’ll just say there have been opportunities to tinker with the core IMO. No one is untouchable, no one is entrenched. The longer you wait, the harder it is as we are seeing.

If this team gets off to a hot start, some will say keeping the status quo was the right strategy. Hopefully the GM will see it as an opportunity to deal from strength.

Well, it’s really not a matter of opinion whether there were opportunities or not. There either were or there weren’t. There probably were opportunities to move the players at a big discounted price. I’d be willing to bet the return would have triggered a whole bunch of posters.

Agreed for sure, however the backup is also critical...

He will need to play 20 to 25 games.

This is the first year that backlund has gone from a ntc to a modified ntc (10 team trade list). At first blush, it would appear to be harder to lose a backlund trade than a Monahan trade. If change is required as many have mentioned, moving out Backlund would be potentially the easiest card to play. All depends not the return and the teams he has ok’d a move to, but I wouldn’t be opposed to moving him if the fit is right.

Moving Backlund who in my view is a 3rd line center does not really address the issue.

Flames should have made a move to one of Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk or Lindholm. Their top two lines are the area of concern

Honestly Lindholm is captain material for this club IMO.

But if the market isn’t there, you can’t force it. Believe me, I’d like to see that too. But that doesn’t appear to be in the cards.

Backlund Monahan and gaudreau are the only incumbents since Treliving took over. So moving him would impact the dynamics in the dressing room, especially since he wears an A. He’s part of the leadership core that hasn’t delivered, so moving him would not be insignificant.

LOL of course it’s all a matter of conjecture. I’m impressed with your confidence in saying there have been no opportunities to alter the core at FMV prices. Even the term “discounted” infers defensiveness. Flames players trade at a discount while the rest of the league does not.

Oh I agree, however I listed the top 4, Gaudreau is the player I would have moved.

Gaudreau needs to be extended, there really is no if’s ands or buts IMO on that. If you want to be underwhelmed by a trade return look no further than what we’d receive for Gaudreau at this time.

Trade is at least 1 year late, Flames now have no choice they have to sign him

That is what happens when you have a moron for a GM who continues to back themselves into a corner.
