How does it work exactly? If he plays like a $6M, he's going to want a similar deal when he's eligible to sign an extension in January. If he underperforms, I doubt Carolina qualifies him and he becomes a free agent.
I don't see any outcome where he signs a cheaper deal.

This could turn out to be a really shrewd deal for Carolina. If they do have the structure of an extension agreed on and if Kotkaniemi can progress to the level of his draft position. This might be the ideal time(before he breaks out) to tender a qualifying offer to a young player from another team.
If he's going to succeed, what better place than in Carolina, where there is less pressure from fans, playing behind a great center and fellow countryman like Aho?

I do, he wanted out of Montreal, this was his way out. I would bet a large sum he signs a multi year extension after this year for a much better value, him and the Canes have probably already agreed to this.

So the question is what is he worth on average over 5-6 years?

I am guessing half of what he gets on this deal. So $3M/yr over 6 years.

Then he has to get a 5 year deal at 2.4 to make it work.

Carolina overpaying massively because they never regained their composure from the aho offer sheet.
The player has all kinda of leverage now. Why is he going to walk away from being qualified at 110% of current deal or ufa status to sign a cheap long term deal? that theory is kind of ridiculous and presupposes that the player or his agent are simpletons

I hope we see this rivalry of offer sheets happen every year back and forth. The league needs more of this.

Well this ends a good bit of fun for what's been an extremely dry and uneventful NHL offseason.
As a fan of a team bereft of bold action, I'll take highlights where I can get them.
Thanks Canes for a fun week.

What happens if he scores 30 goals playing with some elite players?
Will he sign a cheap 6 year deal, which basically proves cap circumvention?
How about he completely flames out, will the Canes honour the non- enforceable deal and still sign him for 6 years, again proving cap circumvention?
No deal can be agreed to legally at this stage.

There is no tampering, the player was a RFA. Any team can negotiate with an RFA, it is right in the CBA. If the Canes have a handshake deal with KK on a long term deal if he signed the offer sheet that is not tampering, the player was a free agent.

And they specifically couldn't sign it, so either party could absolutely back out.
