I think Sidney Crosby looks like a trailer park Sean Monahan.

Looks like Dvorak talks might be heating up, just as expected (along with not matching the offer sheet)

One intriguing name is Eric Staal. I think he is a UFA?
He might be an interesting option to play on the third line. The idiot GM has decided to go with the same crappy forward group it seems so might as well plan around that.

I wanted to address the bolded part of your post above. It's possible that the other teams are offering a fair price for Flames assets, and Treliving is over-valuing his own players. In that case, a fresh voice could come in, look at the offers that are available and decide they're fair and make some deals.
Another possibility is that Treliving isn't well thought of by the other GMs. We know the GM fraternity is pretty much an old boys club, and like any club there are cliques within the club. Is Treliving one of the 'cool kids' or is he still an outsider? Maybe his reputation of being in on everything is starting to work against him because other GMs don't want to discuss the same valuations over and over. A fresh voice might sound great to other GMs, especially if the new GM is more aligned with the other old boys. If a new GM had won a Stanley Cup with Kevyn Adams, that could be the in the Flames need to make an Eichel deal.
It could be like the Calgary Event Centre negotiation. Once Nenshi and King stepped away from the table and some fresh voices became involved the deal got made in fairly short order. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh voice to move forward.

Your complaint is the forward group...and your solution is Eric Staal? He was barely a 12/13th forward on Montreal who no one would argue had an overly deep forward group.

While I don’t think Staal is the answer to our woes, if we are short on C and he is ok uprooting his family for one year, he could be a stopgap if we move one of Backlund or Monahan. He’s been remarkably durable, has a cap winning pedigree and would change culture of dressing room. I have doubts he would be interest in coming here but if we make a deal that weakens us at C, you have to at least look at the option.

Staal got 13 points playing for Buffalo and Montreal, two teams not exactly deep at centre. 3 points in 21 games for the Habs. Dude is 35 years old. I’d rather see Dube play centre, frankly.

So the Flames are actually gonna roll with the same forwards and close to the same D going into this season. I got no confidence in this group for some reason.

The older I get the more seasons in all sports look more like random chance for 65% of the teams.
You have elite teams that are bound to be good. You have terrible teams that are destined for misery.
Then you have this middle 2/3 that just have stuff happen.
For years the Flames went from offensive dynamos to meek offence to dynamos to meek. It was bizarre.
So with the right coach in place finally, I wouldn't be shocked to have a more work than expected this season and surprise. This isn't a contending hockey team, but they were better than their record last season showed. Losing Giordano hurts, but I temper that with the fact that Giordano is bound to decline at some point, and it could have easily been this season.
I think the team as it stands has a top line again, and hopefully Monahan bounces back and we see progression from Dube and Mangiapane and some help from Coleman.
On the blueline it's all down to Andersson and Valimaki to get better, and Tanev and Hanifin to hold serve.
Lots of iffs for sure, but with Sutter coaching a tight system if this team is what it is (still not sold that's the case) they're not going to be as bad as people think.

I agree with this, Sutter will squeeze a lot out of this team in a full season. They will probably make the playoffs.
However, I have my doubts that if the core forwards stay the same, the same guys that haven't been able to do so in the past, will now have the ability to raise their level and take over games in the playoffs.

My biggest worry is that even great coaches eventually lose their touch.
I was really excited when he came back, I thought for sure they were making the playoffs. While the team played better, the littlest thing would go against them to cost them a victory. If the team scored enough, Markstrom would let in a bad goal. If Markstrom played great, the team couldn't score a goal. The fragile mentality of the group was still too much for Darryl to overcome.
Hopefully there is still some magic left in Darryl.

I know it’s Eklind but there is not much else to discuss right now. He is saying rangers and sabres are working on a deal for Eichel that includes LaFreiniere going the other way. I don’t believe it but I would say if any interested team would put up one of their top prospects , I think flames would be out of it .

I think it's a well earned lack of confidence. This team/organization has shown countless times that they don't have what it takes to be anything more than mediocre (at best).
With that said, the Flames are firmly in that "mushy middle" that lends itself to some pretty wild emotional swings as a fan. Every year we see a team like the Habs make a surprising run to some degree - which is damn fine entertainment when you're actively "in it" like Habs fans were during the playoffs. The downside of the off-season is that we're detached from the emotion/fun of the season, and can soberly analyze the fact that the elite few are the only teams that win Stanley Cups. This team just doesn't have a core built on the foundation of players like Crosby+Malkin/Toews+Kane/Bergeron+Chara/Hedman+Vasilevskiy. Having teams built around players of that quality give you every reason to be optimistic, and we just don't have that.
We may very well have the pieces for a really fun and entertaining season, but there is zero reason to believe the on-ice players actually have it in them to win it all, or even win enough to make the playoffs.

11 days to go until training camp. Pretty sure what you see is what we got for the Flames. An underwhelming offseason once again. Not surprised, just disappointed.
