Would agree it's a concern, and people that are worried about it have reason to.
But not everyone is jumping to the worst possible conclusion on this.
The player said he wanted to stay.
Coleman mentioned talking to him in his decision to come here.
So it could just be part of getting a deal done.
Or neither the Gaudreau demands nor the offers for the player in a trade were worth accepting before the deadline expired.
So the worry doesn't bother me. It's the 100% jumping to a conclusion as a fact that does, which some people have done.

I think he's indicated that if a deal can get done, he's open to staying.
I don't think there is any suggestion that it's Calgary or bust.
And as the season wears on, and as he gets closer to UFA, the better bargaining position he is in.

MacInnis was traded for Housley.

Yes my mistake. Flames and Macinnis couldn't agree on a contract but they were able to trade his rights for Phil. A couple of extra picks too.

Wasn’t it an RFA offer sheet?

No. It was the same time as the Blues signed Stevens of an offer sheet though.

It was an offer sheet and the teams worked out the compensation. Both a trade and an offer sheet.

I didn’t know that. Man were they aggressive. I thought at the time that the Flames just weren’t meeting Macinnis’ price and decided to arrange a trade.

Maybe Johnny negotiations have been a little slow because he just got married and had more on his mind

Yes, I’m somewhat sceptical that they can get a deal in place before camp, but that’s fine. Johnny has better things to do right now. I’m sure they’ll get it done eventually.
Hopefully they don’t just cut off negotiations during the entire season, which is what sometimes happens (I think Giroux is doing this). If I’m not mistaken, Backlund signed in October, and Andersson signed mid season as well.

I still think the new extension hinges entirely on what shakes out of the trade market. It seems most likely to me that there are a few deals on the table at various lengths and cap-hits that are contingent on what happens once Jack Eichel is finally moved.

I also think that there is the possibility that they are waiting for him to some back into town and do formal announcement/press conference with him here.

The fact he just got married also means he was a tad busy the last few weeks.

He’s had lots of time to sign a deal. That doesn’t mean he won’t but players get married and sign deals. They are not mutually exclusive.

I think Eichel, Johnny’s wedding, and his closeness to the Hayes family have probably all played a role in the delay on Johnny.
My guess is letting the NTC deadline pass was good grace from the Flames with some reasonable offers on the table to allow the Flames to purely focus on trying to bring Eichel here without letting Johnny think he was being left behind in the process ala Brodie/Markstrom. Conversely, I would imagine bringing Eichel here gets Johnny at a better rate/term for the Flames.

Pretty much this. It’s not like Johnny is the one negotiating, it’s his agent doing all the work. Johnny just needs to sign a piece of paper.

It means if the deal was all but finalized he could wait until afterwards to dot Is and cross Ts.

It's hilarious. Montreal had to deal with an offer sheet and they managed to engineer a deal to fill the gap in a couple days. Treliving? Still trying to find his ass in a phonebooth using both hands and having benefit of a roadmap. I hate "big game" hunters.
