Blues sign Parayko to 8 year extension ($6.5mil AAV)
https://www.nhl.com/blues/news/paray...on/c-326060868
Quote:
Colton Parayko isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
On Wednesday, Parayko agreed to terms on an eight-year contract extension with the St. Louis Blues worth $52 million ($6.5 million AAV).
The 2021-22 season would have been the final year of Parayko's current five-year contract.
The new agreement will keep the St. Albert, Alberta native in St. Louis through the 2029-30 season.
"I can't wait to wear the Blue Note for another nine years," Parayko told stlouisblues.com. "St. Louis has been my home now for six seasons, and this is where I want to be. All the relationships I've gained, the teammates I've had, and the organization have all had a big impact on me. Winning here in 2019 was special, and I want the chance to stay here and do that again.
Parayko has dressed in 418 career regular-season games, tallying 171 points (41 goals, 130 assists), 119 penalty minutes and a plus-54 rating. In 70 career playoff games, he has posted 27 points (eight goals, 19 assists).
Since entering the NHL, Parayko is one of just 10 defensemen with at least 170 points and a plus-50 rating.

great deal if he is healthy
he had serious back problems last season and missed nearly half the regular season. They opted for physio to rehab instead of surgery. We will see if that was the right long term choice

Yup. Another smart Gm getting his guys signed before they start the final year of their contract.

Great deal. I’ve become a huge fan in recent years. He’s a core piece on any team.

You're taking this shot like every GM doesn't try and get ahead of this sort of thing.

Same GM let Alex Pietrangelo walk for nothing a year ago.
Sometimes guys want to re-sign, sometimes they don't.

He was quite bad in 20/21 from a numbers perspective, and generally hasn't been good at driving play for a while.
I predict that this contract will age quite poorly, and quite soon. I suppose he brings the size that GMs desire on the back-end, and those Jones/Nurse contracts have undoubtedly screwed the market up a good amount.

Imagine signing a key piece of your core to an extension before the season starts. These bums don’t know anything about the process.

That's pretty good for a guy who went undrafted in 2011

too bad Army didn't do this with Pietrangelo, or maybe you need both sides to work together

That's really, really expensive for a contract that doesn't even start until 2022.

Every 8 year deal makes me shiver...San Jose is going to be in the gutter for the next decade because they signed theirs at the wrong time. Given the division strength...Blues may also be closer to the end than a reload.

If only he could have done the same thing with their cup winning captain instead of letting him leave for nothing.
I don’t love this contract though. Parayko has regressed pretty badly over the past two seasons. Max term here is really surprising.

If he signed this a year ago I’d say great deal
Now I say this could go either way. Shouldn’t be an issue for the first few years though

Yikes, don't like this deal one bit. Don't think he has earned more than a 2 year contract. He got the money before he proved much really. Money is fine but that term is ridiculous.

The choice was likely this deal or he leaves as a UFA.
2 years was never going to happen. When players get their likely one chance of UFA, they want term.

I love how every move/ signing across the NHL is an indictment against BT.

If I'm St. Louis I take that risk. He hasn't shown enough IMO to get that money for 8 years. Even as a UFA and he develops to his fullest potential don't think this is a great deal. Parayko just got $50 something million guaranteed. That is crazy IMO.
