I see no reason why the Sabres can't let Eichel have his surgery, once they've agreed on WHICH surgery he can have, and then let it sit. It doesn't cost them anything (right....LTIR / insurance?). Then make a deal when he's healthy and there are no questions.
Brisson can fume and fuss all he wants and that's all it is...hot air.

Monahan + 1st + 3rd + Zary + Kylington
That’s 5 pieces right there and pretty competitive offer imo. Hoping we land him!

If the surgery doesn't go well and Eichel is no longer an elite center Buffalo may not be able to trade him at all... so they have incentive to move him sooner rather than later.

Buffalo’s best hope to win this trade is to do it in a similar way that Ottawa won the Karlsson trade or the way that Colorado won the duchene trade… the tough part is that those trades became wins for two reasons:
1. The first round picks were unprotected so they turned out to be higher than the teams acquiring the star players thought they would be… it was the picks that ended up the most valuable piece in the trade.
2. The star players became shells of their former selves fairly quickly after being traded.
Ottawa had a big playoff run so they thought they were a contender. They probably thought the pick they gave for duchene would end up being a mid to late first round pick… instead, it ended up being Bo Byram.
San Jose refused to believe the Stanley cup window on their old team had closed and they traded a first round pick that ended up being Tim Stutzle.
I think Buffalo is focusing too much on getting the A-level prospect from this trade (Zegras or Kakko for example). Teams are not likely to give that up for eichel along with first round picks considering his injury.
If I’m Kevin Adams, I focus on unprotected first round picks. The good thing for Buffalo is that some of the teams that are going after eichel could end up producing a high pick this year. For example, Anaheim could provide a high pick in 2022… the focus should be to make sure that pick is unprotected instead of trying to get Zegras from them. Still want to get some top prospects… just don’t sink any trades by demanding a blue-chip A+ level prospect.
I know picks are always considered “magic beans” but that’s what usually ends up turning into the best asset acquired when trading away a star player.

Well, there is no agreement on which surgery. If there was, he’d have had it months ago.

A deal like this is the dream, as it doesn't affect the Flames current rostser in any way.
Initially I really had some reservations about Gaudreau and Eichel playing together as both are possession type players. After watching more Eichel highlights, it could be magic. Eichel seems to have a massive talent for taking advantage of space, and Gaudreau has a massive talent for creating space.

Buffalo is already a team players don't want to play for and this isn't helping. Team never wins holding a player hostage.

I wonder if that is partially why they are holding on. Eichel now is missing a chunk of the season no doubt so this could be a situation that works out well for the Sabres. Send him to a non-playoff team like Calgary and get their 22 pick with no protections and hope that this team without Eichel for large chunks is going to be in the lottery.
The Ducks 22 1st looks like a great asset as well

Would be a great forward lineup:
Gaudreau-Eichel-Coleman
Tkachuk-Lindholm-Mangiapane
Dube-Backlund-Pitlick
Lucic-Lewis-Ritchie
Of course, that’s when eichel is healthy. The problem is that you’d go at least 3 months with no Eichel and no Monahan. Team would have to play some disciplined Sutter hockey during that time to make the playoffs and get to make use of the loaded roster this year.

I wonder if Dube could centre the 3rd line until Eichel returned.

I just don't see Buffalo wanting anything that currently makes them better like Monahan. They obviously are looking to tank which is pathetic and typical of this crap organization. Poor fans.

It makes no sense for them to trade a 25 year old for a 27 year old that is for sure. Monahan doesn’t move the needle at all

But they absolutely NEED to take back salary in any deal. Monahan fits that bill perfectly.
They will struggle to reach the cap floor as it stands, any Eichel trade will likely lower their team salary regardless of who they get.
I think carrying this circus show into the season is madness on Buffalo's part, but they seem totally prepared to do just that.

They have to be prepared to take back salary or another team needs to be involved that could take a player like Monahan.
Monahan is a player that, when healthy, can easily return a first round pick at the TDL and likely does not improve their team enough to keep them from being a bottom-feeder. Plus they’ll need to reach the cap-floor somehow.

Taking a while to get to 5000

While it makes sense for Buffalo to take on salary if needed in the Eichel trade (and makes it easier for their trade partner to fit $10M in also) couldn't they just reach the floor or add what they need through free agency?

This is true, and Monahan has the benefit of being (a) a relatively high draft pick; (b) a guy who has scored a lot and therefore a name to “sell”; (c) potential upside after his injury; and (c) a centre. To a casual fan, Monahan’s career stats would look pretty good.

I see the Flames, assuming they keep both Tkachuk and Gaudreau, doing alright before Eichel comes back. The Flames were playing pretty great under Sutter, following a short adjustment period, last season. They could run with the top line of Gaudreau/Lindolm/Tkachuk and the 2nd line of Mangiapane/Backlund/Coleman. Those two lines are solid and easily enough to keep the Flames afloat in or around a playoff position. If the Flames can't play at least .500 hockey with those two lines, then there are far more fundamental problems with the team, based around effort and team chemistry, that even Eichel may not be able to fix.

A better idea for them, since there's not much left in free agency, is to take on problem contracts and take on extra assets that way. There are a ton of teams close to the cap or over.

RW depth is some of the worst in the NHL. No way is Coleman a 1st line player, and no way should Mangiapane be on the right side. Move Tkachuk for a RW or two and move Mangiapane back to the left side.
