The idea is that there were secondary trades made this summer that the Flames might have been able to do if they were not holding resources in reserve for Eichel.
Increase Gawdin to whomever the Rangers would want.
Add something else to go with Wolf if Levi is a better prospect.
Point is the Eichel saga has taken so long all of the plan B's that were available have been done with other teams.
Flames are left with going into the season with the same core as last year and the year before that. A core with character issues who have already proven they are not good enough to get anything real accomplished.
I guess but do you think Sam Reinhart changes that?
Was anyone keen to actually trade our 1st this year for Sam Reinhart?
the last thing I want to do is see this team trade MORE futures to muddle along. Unless it is for a significant upgrade like Eichel.
The Buch deal did seem like good value. I'll admit that.
Otherwise though I was hoping more for a hockey deal to change the makeup of the forward group.

Hasn't one of the biggest criticisms of Treliving been his inability to find a top 6 RW? Both Reinhart and Buchnevich would answer that. The Giordano hole is still there, but they are immediately a deeper team up front.
In that scenario I think I would try and flip Monahan for a Dman or winger. Debrusk+Grzelzyk+2nd for Monahan+Kylington
IMO you keep monahan: Eichel will likely be out for a bit so his offensive input from center might yet be important for a stretch, and there's a solid possibility that he increases his value with play coming back from injury/surgery. So keep him and reassess near trade deadline.

Well the point is would you have traded the Flames 1st for Reinhart?
Those are the precise deals that they should not be making.
Reinhart is a complimentary piece on good teams. He's not going to change the fortunes of a team.
And he's also a bad skater. So he doesn't really make the Flames better in an area in which they need to improve (speed)

Absolutely agree with this.
This team needs to a acquire a player that comfortably sits next to Gaudreau as an elite talent. Reinhart is not that. Spending assets on players like that should not and was not done.
(EoB! EoB! Eichel or Bust!)

Seems like a big game of chicken which isn’t going to end well.
Well yeah...you know...after HE asked to be traded from them.

Agree 100%
And a team that is sitting in this mushy middle ground of not good enough to truly compete nor bad enough to completely blow it up is better served not doing anything patchwork if a true talent is available.
Have to also think that Treliving felt that he had a shot or he wouldn't have waited it out.

This is based on nothing but my gut feeling....but my gut feeling has been that the Flames might have the best offer on the table right now.
However I think that it's not good enough for Buffalo. And that Buffalo is really holding out to try to get that blue chip piece / former top 10 pick / top prospect piece (ie. Zegras, Kakko, Rossi) as part of a bigger package.
And my feeling is none of those teams have been willing to include a player of that ilk while also including other draft picks and roster pieces.

I’ve had the same thought. Would not surprise me if Treliving has made an offer that includes Zary/Coronato, a 2022 1st round pick (top 5 protected) and a player like Monahan… that’s the equivalent of 3 first round picks IMO… just shy of the four first round pick equivalents they are asking for. If teams like Anaheim and NY are not willing to give up their top young players, that package is as competitive as any other.
Monahan could easily be worth a first round pick at the TDL if he is 100% healthy this year. Buffalo could trade him then to get the futures-based package they want. They have to hit the cap floor somehow.
