Giordano is gone now, so no more conflict.
It's probably also true that the Flames are kicking tires on a Tkachuk trade, but only if Eichel is coming in. Teams also talk about value and kick tires far more than most fans realize. There's a reason why being a GM is a full time job, and they need multiple assistant GMs. There's constant work going on behind the scenes.
I can see Tkachuk being a St. Louis fan, but I also see him as the kind of person who doesn't want to live in his father's legacy. He'd rather create his own championship team. As long as Calgary is devoted to that, he'll be happy here.

It's time to move on from the Eichel pipedream. Buffalo is insane in their ask and isn't budging. Plan B time.

The Sabres are going to be a brutal hockey team this season whether or not he is dealt before it starts. This helps them in digging in and waiting for what they deem acceptable IMO. Clearly that ask is massive and more than anyone is willing to part with at this point.
No one should be surprised if this thing goes well into the season before getting resolved, though introducing Brisson to the mix may change that up a bit.

Seems like something other players in the league would also be watching. Eichel is their franchise player and they are prepared to bury him for a season. If they are willing to do that to him. What are they going to be willing to do to a regular Joe?
Seems like a big game of chicken which isn’t going to end well.

Buffalo has dug themselves a big hole. They will have a fun locker room this season if Eichel actually has to suit up for them.

I think Plan B is likely the roster we see today with a couple of PTO’s offered. The team would go into the season with cap space and if things go well they have more picks and trade chips than they have had in recent years.
Johnny should be extended before the season is my hope but I think it is Eichel or running it back as their plan A/B

If Monahan can fill the number 2 center spot will anything I think the Flames should still be competitive. He’s a big part of the puzzle.

That was my suspicion regarding the conflict too. I also doubt it was leadership turning their back on Tkachuk for his antics, but more of a "Kid, keep being you but pick your spots better" type of thing. As for Tkachuk being mad about them not backing him up, he isn't a dummy, he probably realized what happened later on and bygones were bygones.

There’s no way anyone would hold a grudge over something like that for a whole season. Per above I think it’s solely media speculation.

Link to the mentioned Tkachuk interview (starts at 1:30)
https://www.nhl.com/video/top-50-rig...4708/c-8879511
Kind of a meh interview but it was nice to see him in a better mood than he was at garbage day at least. Maybe that just had to do with losing and playing the meaningless games down the stretch, or things between him and the team were smoothed out over the summer.

As well, there is a serious rift between Tkachuk and the team. He has not been training with any of the flames this summer, and has made it very clear he wants to go to the states (ideally St. Louis).
Last year after the Muzzin incident, closed door meeting for the players, but then Tkachuk met with management and was told "we will help you fight your battles, but we're not going to fight all of them every night".
From that point on, he was described as acting "pouty" for the rest of the season (which seems obvious now given how he was playing).
The Flames are looking to move him as part of the Eichel package, since there is almost 0% chance he re-signs here next summer, but Buffalo is not that interested in him. Likely because they know he isn't signing there either.
This seems to be the hold up on the Eichel deal. If a 3rd team got involved, Tkachuk would likely end up there with more futures going to Buffalo.

Speaking of Tkachuk. Wouldn't mind an update to this post from August 5th if TBull is around and has heard anything new from his source?

I take all interviews, especially ones that are set up like this, with more than a grain of salt. Tkachuk seems like a smart kid and in a non-spur of the moment interview he's going to give political answers.

Missed out on plan B because they needed the assets for plan A.
Plan B would have been:
- Buchnevich for Gawdin and 2022 2nd round pick (sign Buchnevich for $5.9M)
- Reinhart for Wolf and 2022 1st round pick
- Sign Tatar for $4.8M
- Trade Tkachuk for Tarasenko, Kyrou, Neighbors
- Best Monahan trade for futures

Why do we assume that those teams would take those deals?
I realize as our fans we look at Wolf being equivalent to the goalie in that trade, and Gawdin being the equivalent of Blais. But the reality is that each team has their own book and assessment of players and prospects.

I see what you’re getting at but Gawdin’s value is basically nothing. He’s nowhere near Sammy Blais. Especially for a Rangers team that was gung ho on adding size and toughness throughout their line up this off season.

The idea is that there were secondary trades made this summer that the Flames might have been able to do if they were not holding resources in reserve for Eichel.
Increase Gawdin to whomever the Rangers would want.
Add something else to go with Wolf if Levi is a better prospect.
Point is the Eichel saga has taken so long all of the plan B's that were available have been done with other teams.
Flames are left with going into the season with the same core as last year and the year before that. A core with character issues who have already proven they are not good enough to get anything real accomplished.
