Further update on the boxes.
I played Stewart Creek yesterday (awesome) and ended up playing Blues as that was what the group was doing - since I was being treated to the round as a client I didn't object. Yardage was about 6650.
I noticed a BIG difference compared to 6400. Several holes I had approach shots from around 200 or more. I bombed some drives to only just make it over trouble (number 10 for example). It was a very challenging round. Luckily, I played very well and was very good with my approach shots and ended up breaking 90 for first time this year. I have no doubt I could be in the mid 80s with a shorter tee box.
My summary - the 5 iron rule seemed to work really well for me. It seems like there is an inflection point - going a little bit longer might not make a big difference but once your are too long, you are TOO long.

The 5 iron rule is dumb. I have no business playing courses 7200 yards long.

Yeah, it probably works best for people that don't hit their 5 iron very well.
Or more likely still, it just happens to work for just enough people to keep the perception that it works alive (like carrying low means you're going to have a girl, or whatever)

I can’t verify this, because it really not my area of expertise, but I had a conversation with a friend of mine who knows about golf course design and architecture. He was saying that the point of the tee boxes isn’t really for handicaps, but for the second shot into the green on a par 4. He said that the way it’s thought out is that if you have one big hitter and one average hitter, that they’d both hit the 8 iron into the green if they’re playing the correct tee box. There are a couple factors here, obviously. But the point isn’t that everyone’s landing in the same spot, it’s that they’re using the same iron in.
I don’t know if that’s accurate, but it makes a lot of sense to me.

Yes, that is the point. The idea is that it levels the playing field between opponents who hit the ball different lengths.
The net effect for personal usage however, is that you should choose the box that allows you to have an approach that gives you a reasonable chance to have a reasonable score (and play at a reasonable pace). In other words, reflective of your skill level.

Yeah, and we’ve probably all been stuck behind “that group” playing from the back because one guy crushes the ball and his buddies won’t play from a more forward tee.

Played Lorette today and had a wonderful time. Walked the 18 and shot 83 with four doubles (1, 5, 17 and 18).
Would've broken 80 if I could've just made par on the last 2 but it wasn't meant to be.
So that means my five scores this year have been...
96, 99, 83, 98, 83
Weird.

Just got back from a trip through Calgary and Canmore honoring a fallen sibling. I lost a brother to cancer and I joined my other siblings in a one year memorial of his passing, since the border was closed when he was buried. We played some of his favorite courses in remembrance and I elected to play his clubs so he would be part of the trip. It was a little challenging since I play stiff steel shafts throughout the bag and he was a regular graphite player. We started in Red Deer, playing Riverbend, and then Sundre for "warm up" rounds. After that we hit the mountains and played Stewart Creek, Silvertip, and Banff Springs (his favorite). We finished up in Calgary playing Blue Devil, and a course he never got to play, but hoped to, in Mickelson National (Mickel Mouse National). Was a very emotional trip, but an absolute blast to go out and relive some memories of loved one. Low score was Banff (75) and high score was on Mickelson (82), a first time seeing the course. It was an amazing and after all the melancholy passed made me appreciate just how great Alberta is for golf. You guys are so blessed having all these courses in your backyard and opportunity to get on them with regularity.

My condolences on your loss. That sounds like a great way to honour them though, and I hope it was enjoyable to a large extent as well, despite the circumstances.

Have never heard that ball flight had anything to do with having a girl/boy

last week i was in BC with a couple of guys from work and we golfed at:
Shadow Mountain - we got a great men's night deal that included a burger, fries and golf for $65 or so. found it really amazing that someone could have looked at all the property and managed to insert 19 holes and a driving range in there (they have a spare in case one is shut down)
Bootleg Gap - nice enough course
Trickle Creek - found this the hardest of the three as there seemed to be lots of fairways where the ball was not level with your feet in the middle of the fairway. The coruse elts a group of 8 golfers out ahead of us, so this meant a round of 5h 15m. Teh group was amusing as they would drive up to their balls, grab a club and run to their ball. on the green it looked like a golf "gangb@.." with 8 people standing around the hole. We got some kind of deal there; however, i would have been mad had we paid more than $80
I think it was hole 13 on this course that was diabolical as you hit out about 200 - then have to deal with a hole that is about 225 , but seemingly 75 yards above you.
i shot between 102 and 108 from the blues and was proud of myself that i only manged to lose about 6 balls, while finding about 12 or so with many being pro-v1's or nice taylormade's (so i guess that makes my score honest rather than being bloated from penalty strokes).
I am really struggling with hititng my 6 thru 8 irons consistently and hate par 3's that are 150 or less

Going to start playing Fernie G&CC once or twice a week with a couple clients I met in the area. I was out at the range the other day and the course looks like it's in amazing shape, so I'm looking forward to it.
FYI for anyone in the area or passing through, the restaurant there (Cast Iron Grill) is really, really good. It's a bit of a breath of fresh air vs all the PACKED and outrageously expensive restaurants on main street.

Played my third round after a few weeks off of covid recovery. It's a little 36 par 9 hole course in Valemount, BC.
Start of month: 53, 50 (after 12 hour shift work)
Yesterday after covid and working 26 days at 12 hour shifts (including covid days): 43! personal best. I didn't even feel that good, but only hit 1 double bogie and all pars/bogies otherwise.

If you're over 100 every round you should probably be playing whites to maybe shave off a few strokes.

for the most part i am no worse than double bogey on most holes - so that puts me in the mid-90's; however, then mix in 3 - 4 bd holes where i whiff a chip or sand shot or a putt comes up short and viola - 105
i do try to go from white if it is not overly disruptive; however, i have felt it has not made a huge difference as i wind up around the same.

Ummm, I hate to break it to you, but some bad shots in a round is not a bad luck you thing it's an every golfer thing. If someone is shooting 77, they had some bad shots and putts just like you did, but they don't get to say they're a par golfer minus 5-6 missed shots.

Second consecutive 78 today - feeling hopeful that the game is back (though I know better)
