This is ALL Tom Dundon IMO. A lot of these ruthless businessmen will do petty things like this to make a point, even if they lose money in the process and even if it doesn’t make sense to anyone else.
The Habs should take the picks for sure.

Why would he, though? They have to tender him a qualifying offer of $6.1M again. Why wouldn't he just accept it?

He was a bit of a reach at 3, to be fair. Wasn't a consensus top 5 pick by any stretch.

No they don't. They can walk. But like SureLoss quoted after I posted, sounds like there's already common ground into a long term extension, much less than the $6.1m caphit.

Yes, they can walk, and then they've given up a 1st and 3rd for the privilege of having Kotkaniemi play for them for exactly one season at way too much money. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to have them do that, since he then becomes a UFA early which increases his overall career earning potential.
I mean obviously any long term extension is going to be cheaper, but is it really going to be a good deal? I guess we'll see. If they extend him to something like 6 years x 3.5M it'd be good. If it's not in that range... I dunno, this is a big risk.

... In any event, you have to give Sarah Civian some credit for this closing line from her Athletic article on the offer sheet:
Quote:
Waddell couldn’t immediately be reached for comment, as he was at a rodeo hosted by PNC Arena.
It wasn’t his first.

This offersheet is kinda funny if you crunch all the numbers together: 6,100,015$ + 20$
The 15 is the year Aho got drafted, 20 is his jersey number and 20+15 = 35(th overall) is the draft pick.

Sorry, what's the significance of 35?

ha, I thought the $15 were simply because 15 is Kotkaniemi's number. They've really put a lot of thought into this, which makes the pettiness even funnier.

Sooooooooooo... what would you do if someone offer-sheeted Mangiapane next year for $6.1M. Would you match?
I think it’s unlikely Mang would sign as he seems happy here, but for the sake of discussion, let’s say it was a middle of the pack team so the picks could be decent. Mang also has Arb rights next year FWIW.

He would sign in a heartbeat. Can't turn down a windfall like that.

I'd match, as that's about $1MM or so over his value.

Yes. I would then try to continue existing negotiations to try to extend him on a deal that would kick in the following summer to try to get him under contract for more than a year.
Then I would do what Waddell has done - bide my time and take my revenge... because this is what you get when you offer sheet people apparently.

Look at it this way, if mangipane was holding out and would only sign for 6 million and a team offered a first and third for him would you take it?
Is the first rounder protected? How funny would it be if a team did this, missed the playoffs and their pick won the lottery. Imagine getting the first overall pick for Kotkaniemi...

I remember an interview with Thomas Vanek after signing the Oilers offer sheet, I think it was in German. He said he always wanted to stay, but his agent pretty much told him he'd be out of my mind to not sign it. It's too good of an offer to pass up, so he signed it and hoped Buffalo would match.
Loyality is fine and all, but if a team offers you a truck load of money that puts you out of the typical RFA cycle, I think most players would jump at the opportunity.

True, loyalty only goes so far, and I don’t think it precludes anyone from saying “that’s too much money, I’m signing”.
I guess from Mangiapane’s perspective (or any RFA), you have to consider the value of a one-year bump versus signing a long term deal (although, as mentioned above, there is nothing stopping you from negotiating in principle). I suppose there is value to getting to UFA status as well, but unless you’re good enough to create a legitimate bidding war, are you really going to end up that much further ahead?
Also, maybe the player really wants to play with “X” team, because he grew up there, or whatever reason? I think that’s maybe less of a factor with Mangiapane, especially if he likes it here and wants to stay in the organization that gave him a chance to play in the NHL. For all we know, it’s possible Kotkaniemi hated Montreal...

I mean Habs easily match any offer for Suzuki, whereas this offer sheet for Kotkaniemi actually has a chance to be successful.
