I would think they will match, the fans and media will be all over the player....

Should be interesting

late 1st round pick is not enough for a player with his upside.

Yikes, that's like throwing egg on the face of his current team.

They are making a rival worse either way. Either they add to their own impressive center depth with a kid who has the tools and mindset to be a top end player in the NHL, albeit over paid at this time. Or they cripple at rival's cap even further than it is already on fire.

This was incredibly measured by them. The worst case scenario is they have an over paid, but young with a lot of upside, center while the Habs have next to no one who can play center in the NHL, still being over the cap so they can't go out and get help and the anger of their fans for letting a young fan favourite go. And if he's dog ####, the Canes just walk away next season, for about the same cost they got for taking on Patrick Marleau's cap to buy him out.

Oh I get it, from the Hurricanes side.... Its a really good move

Player however, should have never agreed to the $20 bonus..

Huge mistake in my opinion

I like others like the pettiness of it all. Bergevin seems like that self absorbed peer that gets on your nerves after awhile and this seems pretty personal. Anyway, he’s not worth that money at this moment, but I do believe if he’s surrounded by bigger guys he can develop rapidly into a Gaureau type. Montreal should walk away but to me because of his future potential he’s worth more than a low first and low third. Probably worth a middle first rounder.

In what way? He just got a massive raise, I doubt he's gonna throw the brakes on because it'll hurt Bergevin's feefees. It's super rare that a player gets one over on an organization. He's getting ahead because of the pettiness of Waddell and if I was in his shoes I'd shrug and sign it too.

Or are you being facetious and I'm a dumbdumb.

KK clearly felt dicked around by Montreal. Healthy scratched during the playoffs was a weird call at the time, and might have contributed to his willingness to sign this offersheet.

I don't think it would have mattered. He just got a massive raise he was not going to get any other way. He makes out like a bandit one way or another, getting paid that wage or close to it until UFA or he gets to pick where he plays. They could treat him like the god damn prince, and he should still sign that OS.

The $20 signing bonus is poetry.

I don't like either of the teams involved — they've both showed their asses big-time this off-season — and I feel like this move makes them both worse, so I'm completely on-board.

Not talking about the $6m per year (clearly the agent and player are happy)

I'm referring towards the $20 vs. Aho offer sheet.

Its clearly a shot at the Habs

He is going to get hundreds of questions around this...

Why not accept the contract at $6.1m with a larger bonus ...

Because that was probably not the offer.

Considering this entire thing was a Cartman on Scott Tenorman levels of planned for petty revenge, I would not be shocked if the $20 bonus was non-negotiable.
