If Monahan refuses to waive his NTC to go to Buffalo, who could the flames use to make the cap space work?
If it’s tkachuk, I hop that decreases the package of picks/prospects going to Buffalo because he should be worth more than just a first round pick. Something like tkachuk + 1st round pick (top 10 protected) + Pelletier is all I would do if he’s part of the package.
If it’s backlund, I think the flames will have to improve the package of picks/prospects because I do not think backlund could be traded for the equivalent of a 1st round pick. Backlund is a great player for a competitive team to have but not many of those teams have the cap space to take on backlund for 4 years.
I don’t think the flames will want to trade any of their defence away since they’ve already taken a hit losing gio this offseason.

Freeway is right.
My point is they didn't count on the cap for the roster deadline because they were waived. then they came back on the roster, once LTIR was activated

What about Rasmus Andersson (4.55 mil) then one of Tkachuk or Monahan out for a RD package.
Edit: hm don't like it as much but what about Andersson+Mangiapane+1st for Eichel.

But you have to actually remove them from your roster... I assume they have to be assigned somewhere to lose the cap hit.

I’ll try and find it.
I think it’s this one

He explains it around 7:00 in that link

Here I already explained it. You can use LTIR before day 1.
I never paid attention to how they worked their cap, but you can use LTIR before the season starts

I think you're misinterpreting...
If you listen at the 12 to 14 minute mark, he talks about getting under the cap at the roster deadline (by sending down Yam and Neal), THEN putting Klefbom on LTIR

This could make it work.
We have to trust that two of Dube, Coleman, Pelletier, Neighbors, or zary could be top 6 wingers for the season though. I like the look of the D.

If you waive a player during the season, they were on the roster prior to waivers, and once put on waivers and sent down, you only save the $1M
But for the roster deadline, there is no prior roster for the players to be on. If you put them on waivers that day, and submit the initial roster without them, they don't count toward the roster.
Then, once the roster deadline has been submitted, LTIR comes into effect and you can add those players onto the roster.
So in the Lucic case I suggested, you waive him prior to the roster deadline (assuming he agrees), you submit a roster with Eichel and without Lucic, then LTIR comes into effect and you put Eichel on LTIR and add Lucic to the roster.

I get that Eichel is Eichel, but trading Mangiapane will become a huge regret down the line on our part.

I agree, losing Mangi is a sharp pain. But I think he becomes much harder to sign to the next contract, and we need wingers a lot less than we need a dynamite centre. In this case, we have Dube and Pelletier who fill similar niches, and the hope would be that one could grow to replace what Mangi brings.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Also Eichel will miss half if not a full season a this point so not only do you not have him but you're missing Mangiapane's offense too. Not a killer in the grand scheme of things I suppose but it makes the team weaker for a good stretch that might define their fortunes and throw them into lottery territory without the pick.

Right because that’s the way most teams do it. Listen to like 7:30 and he says another way.
But there is zero chance that while a player is on waivers his whole cap hit comes off the books
https://www.rawcharge.com/2021/1/11/...ry-cap-options
When Johnson was waived his cap hit didn’t disappear

I don't think you do get this
You make that deal 10 times out of 10...teams don't just give away Jack Eichel's you are going to have to give something good.

If Mangipane is the difference between a lotto pick or not then don't even bother trading for Eichel haha. The combo of him Tkachuk would hurt but the Pacific is such garbage that the Flames would be fine unless Markstrom sucks again.
