This contract surprises me. More money and term than I expected either side would want but should be fine for the team.

The contract should play out well, but I'm surprised that it isn't a one year deal for as low as they could get it to keep some cap space.
Eichel deal not a thing for the Flames any more?
Or is a signed Dube part of the deal for Buffalo?

I wonder if Dube will get a shot at center at some point.
Obviously one of Monahan or Backlund would need to move to make room.

I think the deal makes sense for both sides

I don’t think Eichel was a realistic option at any point. This signing cements that line of thought. 2.325m current space at 23 man roster, 3.075 at 22 man roster. Math to bring in Eichel is daunting, let alone the assets going back.

Delta between Monahan and Eichel's contract is $3.6M.
So really with a 21 man roster they could make it happen with no other moves and that's assuming no other roster piece is going back to Buffalo.
Gaudreau - Eichel - Coleman
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Mangiapane
Lucic - Backlund - Dube
Ritchie - Lewis - Pitlick
Hanifin - Andersson
Zadorov -Tanev
Valimaki - Mackey
Kylington
Markstrom
Vladar
That is $81,325,000 cap hit, or $175,000 of cap space. If anything now that they have Valimaki and Dube both locked up it gives them a very clear view of exactly what they need to do in order to fit Eichel in, and ensures they can do it as long as one of Gaudreau/Monahan/Tkachuk are going the other direction.
Also not sure if there are going to be taxi squads again this year...but if they are going to have taxi squads then really it makes sense to just have a 20 player roster.

Bit higher than I expected, but I have no issue. The team clearly thinks Dube can take a big step forward and here's hoping he can. Hopefully at some point this season this contract will look like a steal of a deal.
Excited to see Sutter push him to be a better player.

He might be the new 1C in Buffalo.

Picked it up on my way home from the rig yesterday. The XXL is a little tight around my mid section. The new jerseys just don't fit as well as the old CCM's. Slightly disappointed tbh

I can't see it at this point. Historically too, how often have we seen franchise altering moves for this team just weeks before training camp?

I don't think this suggests they are off Eichel in any way at all.
BUffalo cannot trade a $10M contract without taking AAV back. Period. It is also pretty likely that the return will include a C. So a Flames package probably includes either Monahan or Backlund (or maybe even Lindholm).
One of those guys, plus Dube and a couple other prospects and the AAV is no trouble at all.
And of course, there is also the less likely option of a second trade, such as moving Lucic and picks to a team that can absorb his cap.
Way too many variables to just say 'guess we're out on Eichel'.

How many franchise altering moves just weeks before training camp has any single team made?

With Dube getting this... Edmonton needs to put up at least that amount to sign Kailer Yamamoto with absolutely no cap room to speak of.... assuming Kassian is on LTIR to start the season, but that cap room is already spoken for, and they can send two contracts down to the minor leagues (for a max of just over 2 million in cap savings, but I doubt it higher than 1.7) - that still isn't enough for Yamamoto assuming they sign him for 2.5 million. That dead cap space of over 4.1 million is hurting them. Unless I am missing something, I think they'll need to dump a contract on a trade with less or nothing coming back - assuming they won't dump their newly signed contracts, and the contract(s) need to be significantly more then 1.05 million.... that doesn't leave many they can dump. (Klefbom 4.17, Koskinen 4.5, Turris 1.65, Archibald 1.5)
Curious to see what they do?

Did you end up going with Dube "420"?

Their situation is not that bad.
Removing Klefbom (LTIR), Stalock (3rd G) and Lagesson (8th D), leaves them with $2.45M for Yamamoto.
Take out McLeod (and go with 22 man roster) and they have $3.287M for Yam

I'd agree given their situation and the small market feel of Buffalo ... but Monahan's family home is a 90 minute drive.

I don't dabble in the devil's lettuce -- more of a Banquet guy myself, aka the Coors Heavy. Hence the reason for the ol' barrel.

Can't' the Ducks take on that salary pretty easily?
If the Ducks include one of Zegras/Drysdale and the 2023 1st round pick and whatever other scrubs, I think that's probably deal the Sabres want.
Zegras/Drysdale are bluechip prospects and that 1st round pick has a high chance of being a top 3 pick.
Every other team probably needs to send cap back or out to make it work but I think the Ducks don't have to. They also have a bunch of quality veterans who are UFA who they could easily move to make more cap space if needed.
