At the very least a Gaudreau extension would be nice.
Like, come the #### on already Treliving.

If we do fail to extend Gaudreau, that's the marker that this has to become a burn it to the ground rebuild.
He's flat out our best player and so much of our offense flows directly through him. Without him? This team's skill level gets pitiful.

Gaudreau also rebounded big after being moved to Lindholm's wing. Without that huge sure at the end of year, 22 points in 16 games, Gaudreau's 2020/21 season would have dipped just as far as his 2019/20 season did on those graphs....when Gaudreau and Monahan were playing together from 2019-2021 they were awful. Gaudreau got much better after leaving Monahan, who stayed awful.

I know. Just hearing something big would be temporarily gratifying.
Maybe Johnny's number is dependent on other pending moves?
Johnny wants $9M AAV
Brad says he's more comfortable with $8M AAV BUT... "we're this close to getting Eichel and having you even lower, say $7M would help the cap situation and thusly help surrounding you guys with more support"
John then says okay. I'll go $8.25 but if you get Eichel I'll go $7.5
I'm just throwing out random numbers here, but other posters have speculated that the Johnyy signing or the meat of the negotiations is being held up because the Flames truly believe they're close to something.

League wide my most educated guess is that Eichel is holding up a lot of things.
Unless there is some spite in there somewhere, I can't believe it has taken this long for a trade. It makes no sense. If Adams is going for the Duchesne patience and overpay, he seems to be forgetting that Eichel requires surgery and won't play until he has it. At least with Duchesne, Sakic could just sit on it, expect Duchesne to be a professional and report to camp.
Here you have a player whose value to an acquiring team must be dropping daily.
It just seems stupid to me.
Unless there are some behind the scenes, soft and hard deadlines we aren't aware of.
Just get on with it already.

I could see something like this. I have to believe treliving is confident in re-signing Gaudreau and he’s hoping the eichel signing could help him in getting Gaudreau to want to stay even more and possibly be willing to be more flexible in his AAV.

It could even be length of contract the is depending on a potential key acquisition.
Maybe Johnny is willing to go 5 or 6 but will go 7 or 8 if the Flames land an important piece like Eichel, a different #1 center or a #1 RW.

I’m wondering if ownership is not keen on paying Johnny at this stage. Totally baseless speculation, but a 7-8 year deal, probably richest in the history of the franchise, for a player that has slightly regressed and shrinks in the playoffs when the physicality intensifies.
Part of me wonders if they want to see it play out and are prepared to see him walk/get flipped at the deadline rather than make long term commitments to the player.
Maybe to Tre and staff this is a ‘Last Dance’ situation and they’re not prepared to build into the future with this core.

If they did, which suggests they have waning faith in Gaudreau, and they let the deadline pass before his NTC moved to his favor? Man, what a franchise.

They may just want it both ways. Ice the best roster you can, spend to the cap and playoff mandate, but we won’t extend the core of this team until we see more.
Trading Johnny signals rebuild, which they’re against clearly. So maybe they’re prepared to see him walk or a waning return and see that as a better alternative than a huge commitment to a player they’re no longer enamoured with.
PURE speculation.

Yeah, cap is king. Maybe thats more important in the long run than the return (if they aren't going to sign him).

I’m not gonna rag on Treliving for not having Gaudreau signed. I suspect it all hinges around Eichel. Making a move of that magnitude would set the franchises course for probably the next decade or so.
Get Eichel and Johnny re-signs shortly after. Don’t get Eichel and you have some tough decisions to make.

I think the ship has sailed for getting Eichel and expecting it to positively impact this season. He needed that surgery weeks ago. Acquiring him now would mean looking past this season. It still might make re-signing players easier, but not sure how it would impact morale this year.

It hasn't sailed if they were linked to him as recently as two days ago.
I don't think trading for Eichel is something you do with this season front of mind. Thats a longer term move where you are looking at that opportunity to compete in the coming 5 years. Brad is always talking about things making sense long term so I don't think his being out 60-80% of the next season is an issue with a guy that changes your team and comes with term.
It's really impossible to say until he's actually moved and we know the verdict.
Don't think the Flames will ever be completely out of it, but hard to imagine them ponying up a big bid this late in the game. I feel as if they aren't the most eager of the interested teams. I'm sure they'll put in their offer when Buffalo is ready to make a decision. We'll see how it shakes out.

Agreed, I also find it very unlikely... My guess the lineup is set.
Only exception is a #7 depth dman (Michael Stone type of a player)
Not quite sure Eichel will be traded any time soon.

Bedard draft aside do you think if you trade for Eichel with next season in mind you move the 2023 1st in the trade?

Thats a tough call. Honestly one I wouldn't want to make.
Any 1sts given up will come with a multitude of conditions hinging on him returning to play. So I think if those are in place it alleviates concerns about trading the 2023 1st.
When Eichel plays again you expect to be good enough to be well clear of lottery territory.

My concern is giving up a roster player or 2 and talent, may leave the team in a lotto spot for Shane Wright. That would be so painful to see. With Eichel in the following year and hopefully maturing some younger guys there should be no chance at Bedard.
I also am glad I don't have to be the guy making that decision

The Flames 1st has a lot more value if it's not lottery protected. Tons.
Even if the Flames used a 1st to acquire Eichel, and then it backfired and that 1st won the lottery, I would still be happy with the Eichel trade.
At least the Flames tried. At least they attempted to have a direction. At least Treliving had guts. At least they weren't mediocre.

Interesting take. I think if Eichel is going to be shelved for a season the Flames should only make the trade if they can choose if the pick is in 22 or 23.
